A little bit about us


The Data, Research, Strategy and Net Zero Division provides products and services to support the organisation to deliver policy, programs, services and regulation for infrastructure, transport, communications, the arts, our regions, our cities and our territories.



The Data, Systems and Information Management Branch assists the department with embedding exemplary data and information management practices. This includes data governance and management, implementing projects under the National Freight Data Hub and providing geospatial and information management services.



The opportunity we have available



The Geospatial Services Section is a dynamic and highly motivated team looking to fill a vacancy for a Geospatial Information Services (GIS) Data Analyst at the APS5 level. The team is crucial for maintaining geospatial data assets, metadata and platforms for business areas in the department to make informed decisions for program funding initiatives and to gain insight into complex issues across Australia. A merit pool may be established to fill vacancies for similar roles in the department over a 18-month period.



As a GIS data analyst, you will help maintain and support existing geospatial systems and data that underpin our department’s priorities including the Roads To Recovery Program, the Black Spots Program, the Australian National Rail Data project, Regional Development Area boundaries and communications data. You will be responsible for managing and visualising our data assets and ensuring metadata complies to our established standards. The successful candidate will contribute to a positive hybrid team environment, work cooperatively and collaboratively with team members, and develop productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure positive outcomes and a client-focus.

Skills, attributes and experience required for each role include:



Under limited supervision:

  • Minimum 1-2 years demonstrated experience working with geospatial data and related software applications, particularly Arc GIS Pro, Portal for Arc GIS and FME.
  • Ability to manage and manipulate data assets upholding metadata and data quality standards
  • Ability to contribute to a positive hybrid team environment, work cooperatively and collaboratively with team members, and develop productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to effectively communicate insights and issues to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Obtain and maintain a baseline security clearance


Preferable software platforms
  • ESRI’s Arc GIS Desktop, Enterprise and Cloud (Arc GIS Online)
  • FME Form
  • Microsoft Office


Desirable software platforms
  • SQL Server databases
  • QGIS
  • Power BI
  • Arc GIS Survey123
  • Coding experience (example Python particularly arcpy)

Eligibility requirements


Employment with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts is subject to conditions prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999 including:


  • Citizenship: To be eligible for employment with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts applicants must be an Australian citizen at the time of submitting your application.
  • Health Assessment: the preferred candidate may be required to undergo a medical examination conducted by the department’s preferred medical provider.
  • Security Clearance: the successful candidate must be able to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance at Baseline. You must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information. You must have lived in Australia, or have a checkable background, for at least the preceding five years for Baseline Vetting clearances. More information on the security clearance vetting process is available on the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) website.
  • Qualifications: Formal qualifications in geospatial related discipline and/or extensive industry experience in a related industry.
