Undergraduate Advisor

Reporting to the Manager of Undergraduate Student Services, the Undergraduate Advisor assists with advising prospective and current undergraduate students in the Fielding School of Public Health's (FSPH) School-wide undergraduate majors and minor. The Undergraduate Advisor manages all intake counseling and provides individual counseling to prospective pre-majors and minors. In addition to academic advising, the Undergraduate Advisor participates in outreach activities, updates and edits School and University publications, assists with the major and minor application and admissions processes, and provides support for projects and events in support of undergraduate education. Participates in other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Demonstrated skills and experience to effectively counsel and advise students with professional, academic and/or personal questions and concerns. (Required)

Detailed knowledge of undergraduate academic rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. (Preferred)

Skill in working independently, setting priorities that accurately reflect the relative importance of assigned projects and responsibilities, and following through on duties with minimal supervision. (Required)

Skill in problem solving by gathering data, and generating alternatives in order to enhance operational processes. (Required)

Ability to organize and conduct group presentations to provide information and explain policies and procedures to various constituencies. (Required)

Skill in speaking with persons of various cultural, social economic and educational backgrounds. (Required)

Ability to establish and promote cooperative working relationships and interact diplomatically and effectively with representatives from other academic units/institutions. (Required)

Skill in writing grammatically correct, concise, and logical reports, correspondence, and proposals. (Required)

Skill in using standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook) and the Internet. Adaptability regarding the use of office internal software and web-based applications. (Required)

Ability to use discretion, sound judgment and tact in dealing with confidential materials and information. (Required)

Working knowledge or ability to use UCLA's online academic student information system (OASIS), Counselor Desktop, and other online systems used for academic advising/counseling, including knowledge of campus and community resources for students. (Preferred)

May need to work on weekends or evenings as needed. (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

Bachelor's Degree and 1-3 years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. (Required)
