Lead Painter

The Lead Painter is responsible for providing support to properties managed by UCLA Housing & Hospitality Services. The Lead Painter performs the full range of journey level functions as required. The incumbent performs job site evaluations/estimates, assigns available resources, monitors job progress, assists in the supervision of the unit, inspects the work performed and assumes responsibility for communicating job related problems to appropriate supervisor levels and/or resolves on-site concerns. Under general direction of the Manager, leads a crew of painters in the performance of all in-shop projects, e.g., painting or finishing/refinishing of furniture, including use of spray booth and related equipment. Main duties include work activity coordination; project evaluation/cost estimates; implementation of projects; resolution of job-related problems; and performance of all in-shop painting functions, acting as a liaison between contractor and the University for specific major maintenance projects, assignment and distribution of material to contractors and subsequent evaluation of work.

Qualifications

  • 4 years Work experience of materials, equipment, methods and tools of the painter's trade, including special knowledge of wall covering. (Required) And
  • 4 years Work experience of surface tolerance for: plaster, drywall, wood, metal, plastic, for wall paper, paint and special coatings. (Required) And
  • 2 years Experience in coordinating work activities of a small crew (approximately ten to twenty members, including seasonal staff) in the completion of trade related projects. (Preferred)
  • Skill in mixing paints, varnishes, pigments and drying substances to match desired color and viscosity. Capable of distinguishing different colors. (Required)
  • Skill in estimating type and quantity of materials needed to complete specific assignments. Skill in prioritizing assignments to complete work projects in a timely manner when there are heavy or fluctuating workloads, pressures of deadlines and/or competing requirements. (Required)
  • Ability to inspect, lubricate, clean, adjust or replace equipment and parts related to the paint trade. (Required)
  • Knowledge of fire, safety and building codes; working knowledge of standard safety practices and safe use of equipment related to the paint trade. (Required)
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction. Train and assist with oversight of seasonal employees, including workflow, transportation, distribution of materials and equipment, room access and closure, and time entry to ensure all daily requirements are met for the group. (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with interpersonal skills. Interact effectively and diplomatically with team members, peers, supervisors and all levels of University personnel. (Required)
  • Ability to speak on a one to one basis or in a small group setting, using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to: explain work assignments, department policies and procedures; obtain information from team members or supervisor or relay operational information as appropriate. (Required)
  • Skill in coordinating and supervising paint crew; delegating responsibility, training and evaluating performance. (Required)
  • Ability to stand, crawl, walk and stoop, push, pull and lift/lower objects weighing up to 50lbs from floor to waist high and rotate upper torso. Ability to lift material and parts, up to 50 pounds, from shoulder to above head while standing on a ladder. (Required)
  • Proficiency in English to read technical trade related manuals and written instructions from supervisor. Working knowledge in the use of a computer and programs such as Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook. (Required)
  • Ability to drive a pick-up truck or van. (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • California Driver's License Current (Required)
