Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire two Site Technician’s at Pullman State Historic Site. This position will day travel to various sites to conduct janitorial duties; perform ground maintenance to include riding mowers, planting greenery, plowing snow, patch roads; repair exterior buildings and surroundings to include small construction projects, apply herbicides and pesticides; provide pertinent site information to visitors; conduct visitor tours; minor repairs to plumbing/heating and air conditioning equipment; informs visitors of rules and regulations; performs first aid. The ideal candidate will be able to utilize their experience in building trades skills, communicate recreational and cultural programs effectively and maintain a safe environment. The site preserves surviving portions of the industrial complex developed in the early 1880s by George M. Pullman (1831-1897) to build luxury railroad passenger cars. The factory building and Hotel Florence are located within the Pullman Historic District, which was placed o the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. The site features special interest tours of the factory and hotel, regular temporary exhibits, participates in or co-sponsors a number of special events and community programs for all ages and backgrounds. Essential Functions
  • Performs janitorial duties throughout the grounds
  • Performs grounds maintenance and repair on exterior site buildings and surroundings
  • Assists in implementing recreational and cultural programs at the site
  • Makes minor repairs to building and grounds maintenance equipment and machinery
  • Performs semi-skilled routine maintenance work to interior and exterior site buildings
  • Assists in assuring the safety and security of the site and visiting public
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonable within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or operation of heavy equipment and machinery.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Two (2) years of working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
2. Two (2) years of experience in following written and oral instructions.
3. One (1) year of experience in informing visitors of site and facilities programs, rules and regulations.
4. One (1) year of experience in outdoor recreation.
5. One (1) year of experience in grounds keeping.

1. Requires ability to pass a background check.
2. Valid driver’s license.
3. Ability to obtain pesticide operator’s license within 6 months of employment.
4. Ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year-round basis.
5. Physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds.
6. Ability to lift, carry, and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds.
7. Ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.
8. Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR certification.
