Ophthalmic Assistant Department: Clinical Reports To:Technician Manager Job Summary: This individual is responsible for providing chair-side doctor assistance, performing diagnostic tests as required by physician, and administering treatment as allowed and ordered by the physician.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Two years experience in a healthcare setting: ophthalmology preferred.
Essential Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of medical and ophthalmic terminology.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.

Strong organization with attention to detail.
Demonstrated computer literacy.
Responsibilities:
Communication and Patient Care
Uses autorefractor and lensometers (automatic and manual).
Performs visual field tests.
Performs visual acuity and pinhole tests.
Performs brightness acuity measurement as requested by the physician.
Performs Tear Lab tests as ordered by the physician.
Monitors patient flow, ensuring the physician exam rooms are always full.
Acts as a scribe for physician
Escorts patients to front desk after exam.
Provides patient with paperwork as necessary
Calls in prescriptions for patients
Performs diagnostic tests as ordered by the physician
2. Patient Education:
Reviews the use of Amsler grid testing with patient for at-home monitoring.
Reviews physician instructions with the patient.
Provides appropriate patient education materials as directed by the physician
3. Administrative
Ensures that exam rooms are tidied between patients and at end of day, including sinks and sanitizing equipment.
Cleans all lenses used by doctors.
Opens rooms, turns on equipment, ensures all rooms are stocked at the beginning of the day.
Closes rooms and empties trash at the end of day.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Graduate required
Valid CPR certification
Working toward or current COA/COT certification
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Able to read, write, and communicate.
Knowledge of medical and ophthalmic terminology
Demonstrates a commitment to quality in patient care and maintaining standards of courtesy and friendliness to co-workers.
Well-organized and attention to detail.
Maintains Basic Cardiac Life Support certification
Able to maintain and comply with patient confidentiality and integrity policy on all matters.
Demonstrate ability to take Vital signs (BP, P, R, T, O2 Sats) and identify parameters outside normal limits.
