The Board of Nursing is charged with ensuring safe nursing practice in New Mexico. The Board works with advisory committees around the state that assist with our program for nurses with a substance use disorder. The agency issues licenses or certificates to nurses, technicians, and aides in 10 different categories. The Board also investigates complaints against Licensed Nurses and Certificate Holders regarding potential violations of the Nursing Practice Act, that occur in hospitals, nursing homes, care facilities, laboratories, personal care providers, and therapy settings. The Board of Nursing also conducts site visits at pre-licensure nursing programs, and training programs for hemodialysis technicians and medication aides.
Why does the job exist?
The Nurse Surveyor is primarily responsible for the tracking of unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) programs approved by the Board of Nursing and conducting timely and thorough evaluations of all hemodialysis technician training programs and medication aide training programs in the state.
How does it get done?
The key responsibilities of this position are to:
1) conduct evaluations including four to eight hour targeted site visits across the state of New Mexico for all hemodialysis technician training programs (about 60 statewide) and medication aide training programs (about 70 statewide);
2) write and prepare reports to present to the appropriate advisory committee and board;
3) provide orientation for nurse educators for hemodialysis technician training programs and medication aide training programs;
4) assure the agency has the most updated information for all hemodialysis technician and medication aide training programs;
5) communicate effectively with the administrative assistant on staff and with the supervisor for any issues identified.

Minimum Qualification
Must possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico OR eligibility for such licensure in accordance with New Mexico requirements OR Eligibility for a temporary license issued for employment at a specific institution in New Mexico and three (3) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course Certification within thirty (30) days of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT), extensive personal computer and phone usage. Work is also performed in various clinical settings. Reaching and lifting up to fifty (50) pounds may be required. This position requires travel through the state and occasional travel out of state.
