Human Rights Attorney II/III

The Human Rights Commission is an independent State of Alaska agency housed administratively within the Office of the Governor, reporting to seven Commissioners appointed by the Governor in 5-year rotating terms. Created in 1963 through the Alaska Human Rights Law, AS 18.80, it predates Title VII of the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964. It is a quasi-judicial agency charged with investigating and prosecuting discrimination complaints in five areas: employment, places of public accommodation, credit and financing, the sale and rental of real property, and government practices. The Commission also educates the public about anti-discrimination laws and works to eradicate discrimination where possible. The agency works in conjunction with the federal Equal Employment Opportunities Commission for co-filed cases. The Commission is seeking a Human Rights Attorney II/III to prepare and present discrimination cases at public hearings, conduct reviews of investigative files, make recommendations regarding the sufficiency of the evidence in investigations, and conciliate resolutions to complaints in which the Commission has found substantial evidence of discrimination. As a litigation-focused position, it requires well developed negotiation and analytical skills, a high degree of professionalism and organization, and excellent written and oral communication skills.
