JOB SUMMARY: The Health Educator, OASAS, is responsible for providing comprehensive education and prevention services to individuals and groups, focusing on psychoeducation about substance use among youth aged 14–24. The role involves delivering Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) interventions to the target population with the objective of delaying or reducing the onset of substance use. The Health Educator actively participates in outreach activities, such as tabling events, and is responsible for recruiting and retaining participants. Additionally, the role includes designing, facilitating, and evaluating workshops and programs centered on harm reduction, prevention strategies, and promoting healthy lifestyle choices. Collaboration is a key component of the position, as the Health Educator collaborates with community organizations, healthcare providers, and internal teams to increase awareness, provide resources, and address substance use-related challenges. Core responsibilities also include developing educational materials, conducting outreach, maintaining accurate documentation, and fostering an environment that encourages informed decision-making and well-being. EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM: High School Diploma/ GED with at least three (2) years of professional experience in the field or with alcohol and substance misuse and HIV/AIDS issues, including engagement and motivation, and referral for testing and health care services.
Bachelor’s degree in health education or related field and one (1) year of relevant experience
MINIMUM: Two (2) years’ experience working in substance use group facilitation with the target population (youth 14-24)
Experience working with adolescence around alcohol and substance misuse education.
Experience with conducting outreach and networking which includes prioritizing locations and building and maintaining positive relationships with clients and companies.
Up to 75% of traveling required.
Licensure: A NYS Driver’s License with at least a two (2) year clean driving record, preferred Certification: CASAC, preferred DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Program Delivery & Interventions
Deliver evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions to fidelity, conducting all phases as outlined in the following curriculum:
1. Too Good for Drugs 2. Too Good for Violence 3. Life Skills
Create and manage a Public Service Announcement (PSA) per cycle (4 annually) to promote educational and informational messages on social media platforms.
Establish and facilitate a virtual Youth Advisory Board (YAB), held four times per year.
Partnerships & Outreach
Develop partnerships, Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), and linkages to recruit the target population and deliver programs (e.g., schools, youth agencies).
Provide culturally appropriate and competent substance use prevention education and outreach to the youth population.
Administrative & Reporting
Maintain and update Outlook and e CR calendars regularly.
Ensure all deliverables are met as stipulated in the program contract.
Maintain updated and accurate individual records for all clients via e CR.
Complete monthly reports and close client charts according to BAC and department standards.
Document all services per BAC recordkeeping policies.
Meetings & Collaboration
Attend the monthly Outreach and Partnership meeting.
Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) projects.
Attending agency committee meetings, supervision, team, and department meetings.
Collaborate effectively with team members and complete additional tasks assigned by the supervisor.
Professional Development & Compliance
Attend relevant training and conferences pertaining to the program and target audience.
Join community committees, task forces, or networks related to the program and/or target audience.
Adhere to the business casual dress code.
Perform other duties as assigned based on the needs of the program.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Previous experience utilizing assessment tools.
Outstanding writing and communication skills; including Twitter/Facebook and other multi-media outlets.
Strong outreach Skills, including creating partnerships,
Familiar with using EHR systems, plus.
Effective communication, including writing, speaking, active listening, and presenting.
Ability to work with multiple targeted populations such as youth, HIV+, high-risk/at-risk individuals.
Ability to withstand extended sitting, extended standing, stairs, and extended travel with or without reasonable accommodations.
Must be willing to work weekends, nights, and long/flexible hours as required by the position.
