Health Apprentice Fellowship Developer Our work at Casa de Salud is unique. Every day, we deliver care that is rooted in dignity, trust, creativity, cultural humility, and mutual respect. We see healthcare from a lens that understands the histories of inequalities, oppressions, and structural forces that affect our community. We also see the strengths of our community members, as well as the cultural richness that exists around us. It is with this historical analysis and appreciation for the power within our community that we build towards collective wellness and liberation. Casa de Salud’s health apprentice fellowship is a 17 year old program that works to immerse students in hands-on medical skills training and exposure to disparities in healthcare. The health apprentice team is comprised of students interested in pursuing careers in healthcare. The vast majority of students in the apprenticeship program are Latinx and identify as women. Casa de Salud works to provide holistic and just healthcare to all members of the community regardless of income level, immigration status, or cultural preferences. These values are instilled in our apprentices during their time here. Health apprentices learn cultural humility and patient advocacy in practice, working side by side with clinicians fully aware of the need to look at broader social, economic and structural conditions when evaluating patients and their healthcare needs. Apprentices receive extensive training in patient vitals, phlebotomy and other lab work, EKGs, in-person and over-the-phone patient communication, clinical documentation, and so much more. There are over 350 graduates of the program who have gone on to pursue a variety of careers and jobs, including many who have become clinicians and public health leaders. Many alumni continue to stay connected to the clinic through in-person events, email, phone, and by providing mentorship to current apprentices. As the health apprentice fellowship developer, you will have the opportunity to support and mentor young students interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. Many apprentices are the first in their families to pursue higher education and/or to pursue careers in medicine. In this role, you will help our apprentices build confidence, achieve their goals, and help change the face of medicine. As a result, you will help ensure that New Mexico’s future healthcare workforce is full of integrity, courage, compassion, and cultural humility. The health apprentice fellowship developer works closely with the apprentice team and floor staff to get a better understanding of areas for growth and transformation of the organization. By engaging closely with the apprentice team, you will have the opportunity to uplift the program as well as the voices of individual apprentices. You will work with apprentices to prepare them for presentations and conversations with organizations from all over the nation. You will have the privilege of seeing apprentices flourish into strong, confident, visionary leaders. You will also continue to develop our Apprentice Alumni network, maintain connection with Alumni, and connect Alumni to Casa and to current apprentices. In this role, you will also help expand Casa’s Health Apprentice Fellowship to our new site that we are building in Los Lunas, in Valencia County, and will navigate relationships with high schools and colleges, and will recruit apprentices and create an onboarding program with staff at the new location.
