Groundskeeper

Summary
The Albuquerque Academy Grounds Department is seeking an individual for the position of Groundskeeper. This position is responsible for professional landscaping and grounds maintenance for the school grounds. Albuquerque Academy seeks to maintain a diverse and energetic staff to work on campus. We encourage applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in independent school communities. Essential Functions
  • Maintain campus and athletic turf by irrigating, mowing, fertilizing, aerating, seeding, tilling, laying sod, top-dressing, dethatching, weeding, and spraying and applying pesticides as needed.
  • Maintain athletic fields and outdoor playing areas using lawn care equipment. This includes dragging, raking, and hosing down infields before games and practices, and maintaining and installing fences, windscreens, bleachers, etc.
  • Strip and paint surfaces.
  • Plant and maintain annual and perennial flowers, ornamental grasses, groundcovers, shrubs, trees, and xeric plants.
  • Install and maintain a variety of hardscapes, edging, and gravel and dirt beds. Make minor repairs to concrete walkways, curbs, and brick pathways.
  • Maintain parking lots, walkways, and stairs year-round, including snow and ice removal as needed.
  • Install, maintain, and repair all aspects of our irrigation systems, including valves, controllers, piping, wiring, rotors, spray heads, drip tubing, bubblers, etc.
  • Use a computer and/or smart phone to access work orders, emails, and to operate our irrigation system.
  • Operate a variety of vehicles, machinery, and equipment, including hand/power/garden tools, chainsaws, pickups, dump trailers, golf carts, mowers, lawn sweepers, backhoes, forklifts, skid steer, etc.
  • Maintain and make minor repairs to tools, equipment, and machinery.
  • Rake and remove leaves, limbs, tumbleweeds, debris, trash, and recycling from campus as needed.
  • Collaborate with other Physical Plant departments—Maintenance, Security, Custodial, Event Set-Ups—to ensure campus grounds, buildings, and customers are cared for properly.
  • Work diligently and independently with moderate supervision.
  • Support the School and its mission, always maintaining a high degree of professionalism.
  • Foster and maintain a culture of mutual respect, equitable practice, and joy.
  • Demonstrate cultural competence and communicate and collaborate effectively across differences.
Other Responsibilities
  • Report shortages of supplies to supervisor.
  • Communicate via cell phone to coworkers and supervisor.
  • Observe and report complicated repairs or problems in the field to supervisor.
  • Attend employee meetings as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Job Qualifications

Education
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience
  • Minimum one year of experience in grounds, gardening, or landscaping work is required.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow specific instructions and safety procedures in English.
  • Knowledge of equipment, tools, and procedures used in grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to operate power equipment, grounds machinery, and drive tractors and school vehicles.
Special Requirements
  • A valid Driver’s License is required.
  • Training or certification in horticulture, gardening, irrigation, or landscaping is preferred.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Working Environment
  • Majority of work is performed in an outdoor setting on campus.
  • Work hours are generally from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday
  • Seasonal overtime is required.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds with or without assistance
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Driving around campus in a golf cart or truck
  • Climbing, reaching, and stooping to use equipment or pick up materials
