Description

Radiation Health Physicist 2 (RHP2) in the Office of Radiation Protection
Full time – permanent – hybrid

Be a vital part of Washington State’s mission to safeguard public health. As an RHP2 in the Environmental Sciences Section, you will play a key role in monitoring and controlling radiation exposure to ensure it stays as low as reasonably achievable, protecting the health and safety of communities across the state.

In this role, you will:
  • Conduct sample collection and data analysis to understand the presence and effects of radiation in various environments.
  • Use scientific methods to model radiation release, transport, and exposure, providing crucial insights for environmental protection and public safety.
  • Review and evaluate technically complex documents related to proposed radiation releases and contamination removal, ensuring compliance with safety standards and minimizing risks.

Location and Flexibility
Enjoy the flexibility of our hybrid work environment, where you can balance working from home and collaborating in the office/field. It is anticipated that you’ll be expected to perform most field work activities within the Eastern Washington region 25% of the time with the occasional statewide visits. Training for this role will include in the Richland WA office and field time at the start of your employment with us.

Experience defined below may have been gained through paid or unpaid activities. Please ensure any relevant experience defined below is outlined in your cover letter, resume, and/or applicant profile.

Option 1
: Two (2) years as a Radiation Health Physicist 1 conducting the typical work of that classification, or equivalent, in an official radiation control program.

Option 2
: A Bachelor’s degree or higher in physical science, engineering (all branches), or biological science, AND one (1) year of experience in an official radiation control program.


AND for both options:

Computer Skills: Use of computer word processing, input data into databases related to work activities, and communicate with others verbally and in writing, including utilizing email systems.


NOTE:
An official radiation control program is a radiation control program that is large enough to devote full-time staff to the review and control of the use of ionizing radiation with the intent of limiting and reducing human exposure to radiation.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Master’s degree in radiological or nuclear disciplines, radiation safety, health physics, or related field with experience in environmental health physics.
  • Experience with investigating radiation incidents or accidents.
  • Experience interpreting regulations and policies governing the use of radioactive materials.
  • Experience in the field of Radiation Science such that professional experience and education can be used to make decisions that protect the public from sources of ionizing radiation and ensure compliance with applicable state and federal regulations and standards.
  • Experience in Environmental Health Physics.
  • Experience with radiological computer programs.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Federal facilities require security clearance to access sites such as Hanford or PSNS.

  • Work in an environment where exposure to radiation is likely and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required and determined by the level of hazard.
  • Work in primitive and isolated areas such as, aquatic, desert, industrial, and forested environments with natural hazards related to weather, (high and low temperatures ranging between -15F to 120F, snow, rain, etc.) and wildlife (snakes, stinging insects, etc.).
  • Relocate or transfer objects and materials weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Perform my job duties either remotely from home or in-person at the designated DOH site location.
  • Occasional travel may be necessary, sometimes requiring overnight stays or trips out of state. You must be able to legally drive a vehicle or arrange alternative transportation for state business.
  • Engage in emergency response exercises and high-priority assignments as assigned during emergency events.
