Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking a motivated, organized, and professional Telecommunicator Trainee. This candidate will attend training to develop skills necessary for performing complex and diverse actions that take place throughout the state. The Telecommunicator Trainee trains to receive and process requests from Illinois Department of Corrections leadership, performing routine tasks involving communication equipment and a personal computer, and maintaining detailed records of statistical data and information. Essential Functions
  • On an assigned shift and under supervision of the Telecommunications Supervisor, participates in an Illinois Department of Corrections sponsored training program for a period of 6 to 12 months.
  • Receives on the job formal and/or informal orientation in training to acquaint the employee with the duties and responsibilities of the telecommunicator position and the interpretation of law enforcement communication procedures, FCC rules and regulations and DOC/DJJ computer system.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings, conferences, workshops, and other activities which provide meaningful learning experiences.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of four (4) years of high school.
  • Requires skill to keyboard accurately at a minimum of twenty (20) words per minute.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience monitoring, transmitting, and receiving emergency high-band/low-band and base to base and base to mobile radio messages.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience operating a personal computer to enter and retrieve information.
  • Prefers at least six (6) months experience as a first responder or equivalent.
  • Prefers at least six (6) months experience using a computer utilizing Microsoft Office Suite software or equivalent.
Conditions of Employment
  • Requires ability to acquire a valid LEADS operator certificate.
  • Requires the ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
