About the Academy
Southern Preparatory Academy is a non-denominational military school for grades 6 through 12. Among the more than 31,000 secondary schools in the United States, it is one of only 13 boys’ boarding military schools. Established in 1898 by a New York minister, the academy was founded to provide education to rural Alabamians who lacked access to public schooling. Over the years, it has evolved into a military academy that continues to uphold the founder’s educational philosophy of Judeo-Christian values and self-reliance. This year, we have cadets from thirteen different states, as well as international cadets from Guatemala and Costa Rica.
The academy’s structured environment is designed to help cadets achieve their best work. Our teaching faculty, who average 12 years of service at Southern Prep, are supported by athletic coaches, the military department, and enforced study hours to promote academic success. With small class sizes, our professional teaching staff fosters close relationships to encourage achievement. Our Dean is dedicated to preparing young men for college. In the past four years, graduates have received academic, athletic, and ROTC scholarships to a variety of colleges and universities, including Auburn University, University of Alabama, University of Louisville, Birmingham Southern College, The Citadel, Berea College, Graceland College (Iowa), Huntington College, Marion Military Institute, Georgia Military College, and University of North Georgia.
Southern Prep also offers a unique opportunity for cadets to develop leadership skills in a holistic learning environment. Under the guidance of retired military personnel, cadets learn to respect authority while being held accountable for their actions and the actions of those under their command. Our graduates leave Southern Prep with strong leadership skills and experiences that are applicable in any field of employment. We aim to graduate caring, driven, and well-rounded individuals.

Job Description: The Commandant is primarily responsible for ensuring the safety of all Cadets and adherence to Cadet Regulations and school policies. The Commandant supervises a team of 15 personnel who mentor and guide Cadets in their development into young men of good character.
Key responsibilities include:
Job Skill Requirements: 4yr college degree, Veteran with Honorable Discharge, previous larger organization leadership experience, great verbal and written communication skills, experience working with children, experience being part of a team in a fast-paced environment, must pass a drug screening test and background investigation.
Desired Job Skills: Field Grade officer, graduate of military school or college, affiliation with nationally accredited youth organization ex: Boy Scouts of America.
Compensation and Benefits: $65-75k salary range, 3-bedroom house with utilities paid, medical insurance shared cost, retirement 401k matching, and meals. Free tuition at Southern Prep for male children age 10-18 yrs old.
Southern Prep is a drug & tobacco free campus with a policy of unannounced random drug testing for all employees.

- Exercising general oversight of all cadet affairs, including discipline, dorm supervision, activities, promotions, demotions, military and leadership training.
- Hiring and supervising TACs (Tactical Officers).
- Managing weekend activities, campus security, and the health and welfare of all cadets.
- Leading by example in the military department, training Cadets on daily tasks as part of the academy curriculum. This includes instruction, inspection, and on-the-spot corrections related to cadet appearance, room/barracks cleanliness, and drill.
