Examples of Duties

• Manages a rotating schedule of up to 14 vehicles assuring all vehicles receive the care they require on the preset intervals determined by mechanic staff.
• Operates the bus cleaning equipment assuring proper use to avoid machine and vehicle damage.
• Performs a variety of tasks to clean the interior of transit coaches, including cleaning seats, windows and handrails, vacuuming, sweeping, scrubbing and mopping floors, removing graffiti, cleaning and disinfecting bio-spills and other special cleaning needs.
• Regenerated buses according to mechanic's prescribed schedules.
• Checking, filling and recording all fluid levels in the entire fleet on a daily basis.
• Develops and adheres to safe maintenance practices, including following OSHA rules/regulations and ensuring that the work-space is well organized and clean in order to avoid trips and falls.
• Responsible for inventory of all janitorial supplies needed for bus cleaning.
• Operates a fork lift and relocates buses at the Transit Center.
• Actively participates in safety or educational training as required.

• Provide instruction to other employees of this or a similar job classification in all aspects of procedure and technique relating to the duties required by this job description unless such instruction requires a specialized certification which the employee doing the training does not have.
• Report damage, malfunctions and other irregularities of the vehicle to mechanic or Transit Director.
• Perform related other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Demonstration of material/maintenance knowledge and aptitude.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions, and read and comprehend technical service manuals required.
• Sufficient computer literacy to operate a simple database and record-keeping skills necessary to develop and maintain a preventive maintenance program, record system and inventories.
• Willingness and ability to attend and participate in al training and training exercises and share personal knowledge and / or relevant materials in a classroom or field training environment relating to subjects beneficial to other borough employees and/or required by management.
• Skillful at cooperating with others and performing the various job-related duties as assigned. Must maintain courteous and productive relationship with coworkers, the public, and other business contacts.
• The position is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) - Federal Transit Administration (FTA)_ drug and alcohol testing. Additionally, applicants of safety-sensitive positions are required (even if ultimately not hired) to provide the Ketchikan Gateway Borough (Borough) with signed written releases requesting USDOT drug and alcohol records from all previous, USDOT-covered, employers that the applicant has worked for within the last two years. Failure to do so will result in the employment offer being rescinded. The Borough is also required to ask all applicants (even if ultimately not hired) if they have test positive or refused to test on a pre-employment test for any USDOT covered employer within the last two years.

• Must be able to hear.
• Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; and taste or smell.
• Each of the listed activities also requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, climbing on stools and ladders, and routinely lift and carry items and boxes up to seventy (70) pounds, occasionally lifting weights up to 100 pounds.

Requirements

• Ability to obtain a State of Alaska Driver's License Class B CDL endorsement within 30 days of hire.

• High school diploma or GED equivalent and specialized training in mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field required.
• Experience with automotive detailing/washing preferred.
