What you will be doing:
The Airport Safety Management System (SMS) Manager works closely with airport sections, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), airport tenants, airlines, contractors and the public to instill a positive safety culture at the airport. The incumbent is expected to analyze hazards and propose mitigations for a variety of safety issues and is responsible for coordinating mitigation strategies across numerous disciplines. This position helps increase airport staff awareness of all aspects of safety preparation to include responses to natural disasters.

The unit mission is to Operate, Develop, and Maintain Anchorage International Airport. This position contributes directly to the safe and efficient operation of the airport by identifying hazards at the airport and tracking mitigations to ensure risks remain at a safe level. Ensuring conformance with FAA safety guidelines is a core task of this job, which not only helps keep the traveling public safe, but also ensures federal grants in the sum of tens of millions of dollars per year continue to flow to the airport. These federal dollars are key to the continued development and maintenance of the airport infrastructure.

The working environment you can expect:
The job is physically located at Anchorage International Airport with offices in the North Terminal. Work is primarily conducted by driving or walking around the airport doing visual inspections or attending to operations issues. Some work is done in an office setting at a computer or collaborating with others in their work centers or during conferences and work groups. Work groups often involve airport tenants, airline representatives and functional representatives from federal and state agencies.
To be successful in the position a candidate will need the following competencies, knowledge, skills, and abilities:

- Problem Solving: Identifies and analyzes problems; weighs relevance and accuracy of information; generates and evaluates alternative solutions; makes recommendations.
Special Note:
- Incumbent must attain certification as an Airport Security Coordinator within 6 months of the date of hire.
- Incumbent must have a valid driver’s license.
- Incumbent must submit to and pass an FBI, fingerprint based criminal history records check and Transportation Security Administration Security Threat Assessment.

AIRPORT SECURITY BADGE
Candidates for this position must be eligible for an airport identification badge in accordance with Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations (49 CFR 1542) which requires fingerprinting and a criminal background check. The successful applicant must pass a fingerprint-based criminal history record check as well as a comprehensive background investigation, along with a Transportation Security Administration Security Threat Assessment.
