Job objectives and responsibilities
Join us as the Head of Residence and Wellbeing, where you will take the lead in delivering exceptional Prisons Residential Services Function that encompasses Admissions, Residential Wings, ISMS Recovery Wing, Staff Health & Well-being, Keywork delivery, Community Engagement, ROTL placements, Enrichment Activities, and Regime Delivery. This pivotal role champions a safe, secure, and respectful environment, nurturing a ‘Rehabilitative & Restorative Culture' for both staff and prisoners.
You will steer the compliance with all contractual obligations, standards, and legislation, ensuring that we achieve or exceed ambitious Prison Performance Targets. Your leadership will empower staff through coaching and support, enhancing operational efficiency and prisoner welfare.
As the Director's representative, you will be at the forefront of daily operations, chairing adjudications, and overseeing the establishment's strategic plan while adhering to HMIP findings. Your communication skills will shine as you disseminate vital information, ensuring our high standards of Quality, Health, Safety, and Environmental compliance are met across the board.
Collaboration is key! You'll liaise with stakeholders to safeguard our reputation and resolve issues while fostering a culture of respect, dignity, and continuous improvement. You'll play a crucial role in managing serious operational incidents and will represent us as Silver Commander in coordination with Care & Custody and HMPPS Gold Command. Your participation in Mitie initiatives will help cultivate our talent pipeline and enhance succession planning.
You'll oversee exciting operational projects outlined in the Annual Custodial Service Delivery Plan, consistently reviewing Tier 2 Enrichment activities to drive engagement and enrichment. As a vital member of our Senior Management Team, you will embrace additional responsibilities to ensure the efficient operation of the prison thrives.

Person Specification
The ideal candidate should have previous experience working within a prison custodial or secure environment at a senior level. They must understand what makes a restorative leader, possess the skills required to deliver this, and can motivate and engage others. Experience in performance improvement and managing key performance indicators to enhance service delivery is essential. The candidate should also have experience in line management and supporting or coaching staff to achieve effective results across various functions. The ability to perform well under pressure and balance competing priorities is crucial. Additionally, the candidate should have experience in establishing and maintaining stakeholder relationships at a senior level for the benefit of the contract and service delivery. High ethical standards and an innate ability to lead with integrity are required.
The candidate should have technical knowledge of relevant prison legislation, policies, standards, inspection, and audit processes, as well as knowledge of the wider criminal justice system. Experience in incident management and resolution is preferred. Silver command training or a commitment to complete relevant training is desirable. Knowledge of third-party expectations, including but not limited to HMIP, is also preferred.
The candidate should have qualifications or relevant experience equivalent to Level 3 or above, such as A levels, Advanced Apprenticeship, AS Levels, International Baccalaureate diploma, Level 3 Awards, Certificates and Diplomas, or Level 3 NVQ accreditations.
