Teaching Assistant – UniPrep Uni101

  • Exciting teaching and mentoring opportunity for postgraduate students committed to ensuring Māori and Pasifika student wellbeing and success
  • Hourly paid summer contract (20-30 hours per week from 13 January to 7 March 2024; HTA salary band commensurate with experience) at AUT's South Campus (Manukau)
AUT's Office of Pacific Advancement is looking for Teaching Assistants (TA) from across AUT's academic disciplines to implement Uni101 - the academic course component of Uni Prep 2024. Uni101 within the Uni Prep programme is designed to support academic preparedness for Māori and Pacific high school leavers transitioning to university.
TAs are responsible for teaching and mentoring a whānau group of 25 students pursuing a degree in their faculty by cultivating a culturally affirming and inspiring learning environment that:
  • Honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te Aronui: AUT's Te Tiriti framework, and centres ancestral knowledge from across Te Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa
  • Supports students to strengthen their sense of belonging, wellbeing, and academic preparedness in their transition journey
This role requires the successful delivery of culturally enriching tutorials using the material prepared for Uni Prep/Uni101 under the mentorship of the Uni Prep Uni101 Cohort Lead. TAs are responsible for ensuring students are clearly aware of learning outcomes and assessment requirements and are meeting the requirements of the paper as well as mentoring students on their academic journey through the creation of a university transition success plan.
The ideal candidate will possess a service leadership mindset with effective organisational and communications skills and a strong ability to create a culturally rich and inspiring teaching and learning environment. They will have strong collaboration skills and be committed to working as a team with all Uni Prep staff to support student wellbeing and success. They will be grounded in an approach to work that is cultural, relational, and people-centred, and embraces manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, and kaitiakitanga.
To successful candidates will:
  • Be currently enrolled in a post graduate programme or recently graduated with a post graduate degree;
  • Hold a commitment to strengths-based approaches that empower Māori and Pacific learners to successfully navigate the university experience (prior teaching experience is highly desirable);
  • Provide opportunities to platform Indigenous knowledge, culture, and ways of being through their teaching and learning approach;
  • Promote a tuakana mindset and serve as a mentor to Uni Prep students; and
  • Be comfortable using Canvas and other digital pedagogies and technology to support student learning.
Teaching Assistants report to the Uni Prep 101 Cohort Lead and are a key member of the wider Uni Prep team.
Salary Range: $35.96 per/hr (appointment level and salary commensurate with skills and experience)
