Job Description: Senior Lecturer/ Associate Professor
Position Purpose: The purpose of the Senior Lecturer / Associate Professor position is to provide
outstanding leadership in teaching bioscience, evidence-based practices and
research within nursing pre-registration and postgraduate programmes for the
School of Nursing. This will be achieved by teaching within Nursing
programmes, undertaking high-quality research, supervising students in
doctoral and master’s programmes, mentoring emerging researchers, and
providing academic administrative and professional service to the School,
University, and health sector and Nursing profession. Additionally, the role will
strengthen nursing, health sector, Iwi, and community relationships.

About this area The School of Nursing is within the College of Health, Te Kura Hauora Tangata.
In line with the philosophy of Hauora, the College of Health’s strategic
approach to learning, teaching and research is to view optimal health and
wellbeing as the outcome of multiple factors encompassing individual
differences, diversity, social determinants of health and environmental
interactions. The School of Nursing works closely with hospitals and health
organisations in Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world, to improve the
health of people and their communities. The Associate Professor / Senior
Lecturer position contributes to the teaching, academic and professional
supervision, and the research outputs of the School of Nursing’s nationally and
internationally regarded programmes, with staff demonstrating excellence in
learning, teaching, research, health sector and wider industry and community
engagement.

• Assist in mentoring and the career development of more junior

academic staff.

• Lead and contribute to nursing curriculum reviews and the ongoing

development of nursing programmes and courses.

• Build and maintain external academic and professional networks.

Research • Lead development of a strong research culture within the School of
Nursing and the College, engaging with research structures and
processes.

• Lead in the design and implementation of research projects within

an area of health / nursing within the School.

• Write grant applications for external research funding to support

high quality national and international research.

• Publish in nursing or health related journals, either as a sole or co-

author, to contribute to the reputation and performance of the
School, including Performance Based Research Fund ranking.

• Supervise doctoral and masters research students.

• Support early career researchers to develop a platform of research.

• Maintain online, research related work and engagement records,

and profile as required by the University.

• Develop research-based linkages with a range of stakeholders

internal and external to the School and University. 3

• Present research and act as a discussant at academic conferences

in area of research focus. Teaching / Supervision • Coordinate and teach in postgraduate and undergraduate nursing
courses as required by the Head of School or delegated authority.

• Examine student work, and supervise teaching and marking

undertaken by tutors, assistant lecturers or external personnel.

• Design and maintain study materials relevant to the programme

using a blended approach to delivery, including online courses.

• Undertake student evaluations required by the School or University.

• Ensure all teaching is informed by research and delivered in an

appropriate manner.

• Actively maintain professional relationships with students, the

teaching team and relevant stakeholders.

• Develop and maintain teaching expertise through engagement in

professional development opportunities.

• Respond to stakeholder needs for clinically focused education, such

as professional development courses in nursing and health. Service Service to the Community

• Participate in community service activities that further advance the

profession or field consistent with the University’s charter and
strategic goals.

• Assist the School to develop and strengthen relationships with

professional and stakeholder communities as appropriate.

• Contribute to the broader community and society through the

University’s obligations under the Education Act to fulfil “the role as
critic and conscience of society”.

• Assist the School/University to develop an environment which gives

effect to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. University Responsibilities

• Serve on University and/or School committees.

• Observe University policy and codes of practice in all teaching,

research, community service and administrative practices.

• Contribute to the development of a School environment that values

teamwork, cooperation and collegiality.

• Contribute to the administration of the School.
• Take responsibility for professional self-improvement and

lifespan, including under 17 year olds. Consequently, a safety check
is required by applicants applying for this position and this includes
a police vet.
Qualifications and Experience
Qualifications: • A completed Ph D in nursing or a related discipline (essential).

• A teaching qualification (desirable).

NB. Appointments made where the required qualification is close to
completion will require completion within a specified timeframe as a
condition of appointment.
Experience: • Recent health and/or education experience in nursing (essential).

• Experience in teaching delivery, including the use of electronic and

online technologies in blended and distance teaching delivery
(essential).

• Publication in national and/or international media on aspects of

health care and practice (essential).

• Experience in building and sustaining collaborations with academics,

government agencies, industry stakeholders and community groups
(essential).

• Involvement in research in the area of health (preferred).

• Maintaining and developing external stakeholder relationships

which support the School of Nursing and Massey University.

• Knowledge of Te Ao Māori, mātauranga Māori, tikanga and cultural

safety and skills in developing curriculum.

• Strategic ability to lead research projects/workforce initiatives using

qualitative and quantitative methodologies, including Kaupapa
Māori.

• Ability to supervise doctoral students in mixed methods, including

Kaupapa Māori / indigenous methodologies. Pre-employment checks

• Requirement to pass a Credit History and No Asset Procedure (NAP)

• A safety check in accordance with the Vulnerable Children Act 2014

and the Vulnerable Children (Requirements for Safety Checks of
Children’s Workers) Regulations 2015 is required. Part of this
process includes a requirement to pass the police vetting part of the
safety check.
