We're seeking a Kaiāwhina to work alongside and support whānau in our rohe to improve health outcomes This role is a part time permanent position working across a beautiful stretch of Aotearoa, from Waihi, Thames and through to Paeroa.
Ideally, our new Kaiāwhina will be based in Paeroa, however if you live in this rohe and are passionate about our mahi, nau mai, haere mai, tuku tono mai!
Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
The mahi of our Kaiāwhina supports the growth of healthy pēpī and tamariki, confident whānau and connected communities. Working with whānau to provide additional support. This mahi involves applying mātauranga Māori alongside health promotion, health education, and prevention concepts.
This might involve providing advice which is commonly associated with Whānau Āwhina Plunket’s service such as the introduction of solids or supporting breastfeeding for those that chose this path or settling to sleep. The mahi of a Kaiāwhina also provides for whānau cultural needs – supporting whānau to build connections and confidence in their Māoritanga through for instance the introduction of waiata and pūrākau sessions.
Where there is a need Kaiāwhina can work with multiple agencies and specialists – social workers, food banks, other community groups and our wider Whānau Āwhina services to respond to the needs of our people.
Payrates for Kaiāwhina are between $51,376 and $61,058 depending on experience.
He kōrero mōu | About you
This role involves supporting whānau who might be at different stages of their haerenga to incorporate Te Ao Māori principles and values into how they raise their tamariki, this might involve introducing Māori models of health or connecting whānau with local iwi providers and services.
You will be a warm people person who adopts a whakawhanaungatanga approach to building connections. A background in health promotion, working in a Kaupapa Māori or kōhanga reo setting would be advantageous however we will provide you with the training you need.
Above all else you will bring with you a desire to support whānau and the community we serve. You will have the ability to deliver equitable health outcomes and the skills to link them with the appropriate services, which will make the difference to our rangatira mō āpōpoō.

You will:
Be committed to completing the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Social and Community Services) (Level 4) (Community Health Work) if not already held or to secure recognition of prior learning.
  • hold a full New Zealand drivers license.
  • hold the legal right to work in Aotearoa
