Biosecurity and Biodiversity Assistant
Environment Southland have a variety of Summer Student roles available commencing in November or December 2024.
You are eligible to apply if you are currently enrolled in a tertiary institution or have graduated this year.
All roles are offered at a rate of $27.80 per hour.
All roles are 37.5 hours per week unless specified otherwise

Biosecurity and Biodiversity Assistant:

This varied role is primarily field based, as well as a mix of data entry and stakeholder communication in office. Biosecurity & Biodiversity Assistants will work closely alongside Biosecurity Officers and Biodiversity Community Officers to complete the following work programme:
- Possum Monitoring:
- Planning possum density monitoring
- Setting up and collecting field measurements and data including wax tag possum and rodent ink pads monitoring at sites throughout Southland
- Analysing, recording and reporting monitoring results
- Communication with landowners and stakeholders
- Biosecurity Pest Plants:
- Pest plant control & monitoring
- Site inspections & landowner communications (including phone calls).
- Engaging & working with community groups and the public
- Input of historical and current data for different projects (office based).
- Assist biological control programme
- Biodiversity:
- Planting site preparation, maintenance & planting
- Work alongside community groups or landowners.
- Assist with pest animal and weed control projects.
- Prepare biodiversity management advice (office based).
