Location: Te Tari Matua, Pōneke | National Office, Wellington
Based in Pōneke Wellington, our Policy Puni leads across the public sector to understand and prioritise issues, needs and opportunities impacting on Māori development and wellbeing. The Puni consists of 8 teams focusing on specific Policy areas.
The Economic Development team focus on uplifting Māori economic development through enterprise and labour market policy. We are looking for two Principal Advisors to lead work focused on delivering the Government's priorities for Māori Economic Development.
Te whai wāhitanga | The opportunity
Providing a high standard of advice to the Policy Manager, Economic Development, other key stakeholders within Te Puni Kōkiri and across the wider public sector you will help lead and contribute to shaping and influencing policy. You will
  • Provide a high level of robust, credible, evidence-based advice anchored in the context of iwi, hapu, whānau and Māori as it applies to the needs of the Economic Development team and wider puni
  • Conduct thorough and detailed analysis of complex policy issues to understand their implications, identify potential risks and opportunities and identify potential solutions
  • Work collaboratively with peers at Te Puni Kōkiri and with other government agencies. Includes cross agency work with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, Treasury, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade amongst others
  • Apply and advise on te ao Māori and Te Tiriti based frameworks as they relate to policy at principal analyst level
  • Provide advice and support to Senior and Executive Leadership teams, Ministers and key stakeholders. As a Principal Advisor you will present your analysis and thoughts to leadership when required
  • Increase knowledge of and develop the policy skillsets within the team through coaching and mentoring kaimahi. Promoting a culture of continuous feedback.
The appointment range for this role is between $110,165 and $136,403 per annum and the salary will be determined based on the successful candidate's skills and experience.
Mōu | About you
An experienced policy professional, you will have previous experience in a government policy shop where te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi frameworks underpin your mahi. You will be familiar with the current economic environment in Aotearoa and globally and understand the challenges that Māori organisations and businesses face when aiming to reach their full potential. You will have:
  • The mix of knowledge, skills, practices, and behaviours required by a modern policy practitioner to be able to deliver quality policy advice. Experience working with progressive procurement and public value processes
  • Highly competent in prioritising and managing the flow of information. Including managing and supporting multiple, complex policy projects at once
  • The conceptual and analytical skills to provide solutions to ambiguous or complex problems.
  • Proven ability to lead, manage and support cross-government policy development. Relationship focused, you may have existing relationships with iwi, Councils and/or central government
  • Have highly developed communication skills, including written. Ideally you will have competency in te reo Māori, or as a minimum have a willingness to learn
  • Are comfortable in an ao Māori environment and situations where tikanga is observed.
