We are looking for a Senior Scientist to join our Weather Research and Technology unit at Vaisala headquarters in Vantaa, Finland. Join us in advancing weather radar solutions with a team of world-class experts.
Vaisala is a global leader in measurement instruments and intelligence helping industries, nations, people, and the planet to thrive. From predicting hurricanes to optimizing renewable energy production, our technology is used where it matters the most – from data centers, windfarms and laboratories to airports, the Arctic and even the surface of Mars. Our team of over 2,300 experts and 59 nationalities around the world is committed to taking every measure for the planet. Driven by our shared purpose, curiosity, and pioneering spirit, we stay ahead and make a difference. At Vaisala, you don't have to fit in to belong.
Why join us?
Play a key role as a holistic senior weather radar expert, to advance weather radar technology by algorithm development and by application expertise for cutting-edge atmospheric measurement solutions.
Work alongside top scientists to develop world-class measurement devices, ensuring that our instruments meet the highest quality standards in the industry.
Leading performance, not location. Our culture is trust-based. We treasure face-to-face collaboration with our colleagues, but hybrid work and flexibility are the new norm for us.
What's your role? You will be part of our Research and Technology team of experts, that work on both applied technology research projects as well as product development, covering a broad variety of environmental measurement technologies. In this role you will be focusing on advancing weather radar technology through algorithm development and research. You will report to Science Team Lead. As a senior weather radar substance matter expert, your responsibilities include:
Take holistic responsibility for key weather radar-related algorithm development. This can range from applied research of innovative novel algorithms, to ensuring accuracy and performance aspects, to contributing in that solutions get properly implemented in end products in a release program type of setup.
Following external development in academy and industry technology fields. Working closely with product development and product management colleagues, providing expert input towards our technology roadmaps and business strategy.
Working both at radar signal processor level, as well as radar application level.
Approach topics holistically and from the end user perspective; being able to understand various weather radar technologies, hardware, software, and see how different choices in the measurement chain are visible to the customer.
What will you bring?
A MSc or Ph D degree in physics, meteorology, mathematics, electrical engineering (RF), or a related field.
Proven expert’s track record in weather radar systems, radar algorithms, or signal processing, and weather radar applications. Strong understanding on atmospheric remote measurement technologies, not necessarily limited to just weather radars.
Passion for ownership: to get novel innovative research matured, developed an into use in actual customer products.
Proficiency in radar signal processing tools and programming languages such as Python or Matlab.
Experience with research methodologies and developing algorithms for atmospheric measurement applications. Insights into new ways to use break-through weather radar technology enablers like solid-state power amplifiers.
Strong analytical skills and a solid understanding of how algorithm choices impact the accuracy and usability of radar data.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams over the continent.
