Deputy Workers' Advocate (WAO) - Investigations and Standards Officer (ISO)

WAO Role Reporting to the Workers’ Advocate, this position Acts as an advocate for injured workers or their dependants to ensure that all workers are aware of their rights and obligations under the Workers Compensation Act and the procedures for filing a claim.

Essential Qualifications

Post-secondary degree in a related field (criminology, social sciences, social work, law, human resources, health sciences or disability management) or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a public service setting.
Experience in each of the following:
  • Providing advice to clients regarding the interpretation and application of legislation, regulation, policies and procedures;
  • Effectively managing a high volume, demanding, active caseload; and
  • Effectively managing clients in crisis (i.e., angry, distraught).


Experience in one or more of the following:


  • Investigation/case manager of public administration issues;
  • Adjudicator in a court, tribunal or board setting;
  • And/or Client representative before courts, tribunals or boards.
Candidates who have education, training, and/or considerable experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above will be equally considered.


Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Suitability
Candidates should have and may be assessed on their:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the role of the Workers’ Advocate Office and Investigations and Standards Office.
  • Experience providing services in correctional and/or workers’ compensation systems, familiarity with respective standards and best practices and trends.
  • Experience using the MS Suite of programs to write either reports, decisions or submissions, using open sources to conduct research and assisting in developing complex case and investigation plans.
  • Knowledge and skills in adjudication, advocacy and investigations.
  • Knowledge of administrative law and the principles of fairness and natural justice.
  • Competence in determining and communicating client and organizational rights and obligations in a public service setting.
  • Ability to be impartial and make challenging decisions based upon merit and evidence.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail, process and analyze large amounts of information.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.


The following will be considered assets:

  • 2 or more years’ experience representing clients before decision making bodies and/or as an adjudicator or member of an administrative board or tribunal.
  • Experience working with the Workers' Safety and Compensation Act and/or Corrections Act and related legislation, regulations and policies.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Clear criminal records check.
  • Valid Yukon Class 5 driver’s licence.
