Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster, and easier. Our Deputy CFO Office is looking for eight (8) CO-OP Students to provide support within the various Finance teams. The CO-OP Students will work with internal and external stakeholders to provide administrative support, create presentations, maintain systems, and recommend improvements to processes. A description of the areas are as follows: Accounting: The Accounting Team leads the month end close processes which facilitates the preparation of the quarterly balance sheet and annual financial statements for Senior Management, Board of Directors and our stakeholders such as the Ministry of Transportation and the Province of Ontario. The Team activities include coordinating the assurance work with external auditors, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and the General Ledger accounting and analysis, statutory financial reporting ensuring compliance with corporate policies and generally accepted accounting policies (GAAP) and tax compliance. Capital Cost Accounting: The Capital Cost Accounting team provides enterprise level finance controls for the capital projects portfolio to deliver timely and accurate financial information for reporting and audit purposes. The team ensures capital cost accounting compliance with Public Sector Accounting Standards and focuses on maintaining effective financial review of capital costs. Revenue & Treasury: The Revenue and Treasury team manages the Banking Operations and revenue accounting for the Metrolinx Enterprise. Activities include cashflow forecasting, revenue recognition, participating in Payments projects, cash management activities, journal entries and reconciliations. Embedded Finance (Corporate Finance, Payments Finance and Operations – Rapid Transit): The Embedded Finance Team works along side the Business Unit as a trusted business partner and is crucial in advancing the financial strategies, goals and decisions of the Business Unit. Through active involvement, it provides well-informed financial guidance and support to enable the Business Unit to achieve its financial goals. The teams support operating and capital financial portfolios and financial asset management functions. This includes capital budgeting/forecasting, financial reporting and insights to drive effective business decisions, asset classes on memo development, and capital funding strategy development. Financial Planning: The FP&A team plays a pivotal role in ensuring the organization’s financial stability and adherence to legislative requirements. Our key responsibilities include:
Leading the development of the multi-year operating revenue and expense budget process, essential for securing funding from the government.
The team is the primary point of contact for the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) on various financial requests, supports the development of monthly financial performance report and quarterly forecasts, report backs and maintains a collaborative relationship with the Ministry to support the budget submission to the Treasury Board.
Leading the development of Metrolinx’s public facing Annual Business Plan as well as the MD&A of the Annual Report.
Manage monthly Business Performance Reporting for the organization which measures financial results and key performance indicators vs. target and includes analysis of risks, pressures and mitigation plans; results are presented at SMT monthly
Leading the quarterly forecasting process for the organization
Identify financial risks that may impact business performance and propose mitigation strategies
Conduct sensitivity analyses to assess the impact of various business decisions on financial health
The Business Intelligence Team (BIT) within FP&A builds Power BI reports and supports analytics requests
The Hyperion team manages Oracle Hyperion Planning which is an Enterprise Performance Management planning solution used for the annual five-year operating budget, monthly variance analysis and in-year forecasting.
What will I be doing?
Supports business case financial modeling for various business intake projects and initiatives with a view to monitor and manage costs and inform performance management activities
Supports ad-hoc deliverables and projects that may involve developing worksheet templates for analyses, updating process documentation/manuals, preparing power point slides, and working with various cross functional teams on initiatives.
Assist with the preparation of general ledger reconciliations and analysis
Provides a variety of administrative and/or technical services to support the business
Help produce daily/weekly/monthly operational documentation and reports, as assigned
Help and support to staff in a variety of areas, including gathering, inputting, organizing, and interpreting data for reports/presentations/meetings/projects
Prepare agendas, coordinate, attend, and take minutes for daily technical/operational meetings
Support gathering audit evidence in the external auditor’s portal
Assist in the production and formatting of operational documentation
Maintains and updates electronic and hardcopy filing systems and provides record management services
Recommends improvements to existing processes and procedures to achieve greater efficiency
Work with internal and external stakeholders to collect data and respond to inquiries
Assist with maintenance, development, monitoring and reporting of tools and systems for data analysis
Develop spreadsheets, forms, and databases to input, track, store and retrieve data
Preparing reports and other supporting documents such as spread sheets, charts, and graphics.
Presenting key findings to team members and management as required.
Certain travel between downtown offices (in walking distance) may be required
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
Must be attending school full-time and returning to an academic institution
Enrolled full-time in Finance, Economics, Accounting or Business at a post-secondary institution and working towards CPA designation
Must be at least 15 years of age before starting employment
Previous experience working in Finance is preferred
Strong written, oral communication and interpersonal skills are required
Competence in software such as Power BI and Microsoft Office, especially Excel
Ability to work independently and in a team setting
A willingness to learn while being exposed to all aspects of Finance
