Research Coordinator and Communications Manager

Who we are
The Office of the Supervising Scientist is responsible for protecting the environment of the Alligator Rivers Region, including Kakadu National Park, from the effects of uranium mining. We conduct independent research and monitoring around uranium mining sites, participate in and oversee the regulatory process for uranium mining in the region and develop standards and practices for environmental protection.

The Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist conducts world-class research for monitoring and assessing the environmental impacts of uranium mining. We are a multidisciplinary research institute with programs spanning environmental radiation, water and sediment quality, ecosystem restoration, geomorphology, omics, drone remote sensing and environmental applications of artificial intelligence. Our research is currently focused on addressing key information needs for rehabilitation and post-closure monitoring of the Ranger uranium mine.

The Job
We are seeking a highly skilled organiser and communicator to facilitate our research program management and communicate our leading-edge science to stakeholders and everyday citizens. The position will report to and work under broad direction from the Director Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist.

Duties include:

  • Coordinate research program tracking and reporting across the organisation and facilitate project approval and close out processes.
  • Facilitate cooperation with external stakeholders to manage the joint list of projects required to address key information needs for rehabilitation of the Ranger uranium mine.
  • Manage project and publications databases, perform quality checks of the information they contain and coordinate their upkeep.
  • Manage the end-to-end production of organisation-wide reports, presentations and research permit applications.
  • Develop and deliver science communication products tailored to non-technical audiences and stakeholder needs.
  • Assist with organising stakeholder meetings and public-facing events and represent the organisation at such events.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other areas of the department and externally to identify opportunities for engagement in departmental and national science initiatives.

What we are looking for
Knowledge and experience
  • Experience in a research coordination role or working effectively and flexibly across teams to facilitate program administration and the timely delivery of outputs.
  • Experience working in a project management environment, preferably within a public sector science or research organisation.
  • Experience in compiling, formatting and editing publication-quality reports and presentations.
  • Experience using and managing databases and spreadsheets.
  • Experience in developing communication content and campaigns across social and traditional media, including awareness of best practice and leveraging metrics and analytics to maximise engagement.
  • Experience in communicating science to non-technical audiences in an accessible, understandable and engaging way.

Skills and capabilities
  • Highly developed organisational skills with the ability to schedule and prioritise tasks whilst being flexible to changing circumstances and to provide clear information and advice to internal and external stakeholders on priorities and deadlines.
  • Excellent written, verbal and digital communication skills, including the ability to summarise technical information into plain English.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate scientific information in an engaging way across different media platforms and channels for non-expert audiences.
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate effective two-way communication and cooperation.
  • Strong attention to detail skills with the ability to identify and correct errors in the content and formatting of text, tables, figures and database information.
  • Proficiency using computer software products for editing, publishing, design and database management.
  • A can-do attitude, sound professional judgement and commitment to learning, seeking advice, sharing knowledge and responding positively to feedback
