The Department of Medical Oncology of the Canberra Hospital (TCH) has thirteen staff specialists (with some members on fractional appointments). It works closely with the Departments of Radiation Oncology, Haematology and Palliative Care. Four RACP accredited positions are available for advanced core training from 6 February 2023. Advanced trainees will attend 4-5 outpatient clinics per week and are responsible for ward consultations, weekend inpatient cover and other after-hours on-call responsibilities. They will also support a Cancer Rapid Assessment Unit and the Chemotherapy floor. They will oversee two basic physician training registrars, a JMO and an intern who are responsible for the inpatient care of oncology patients. A broad range of oncology experience will be obtained at both the Canberra Hospital and Calvary Hospital. All advanced trainees are expected to attend a wide range of multidisciplinary meetings (MDMs), including Head & Neck, Breast, GI, Uro-Oncology, Sarcoma, Melanoma, Neuro-oncology, Gynaecology and Lung Cancer groups in Canberra. These teams are each supported by Cancer Specialist Nurses.
The Unit supports an active clinical trials program with a portfolio of cooperative group studies and industry studies as well as academic research collaborations with other departments in TCH, the ANU and University of Canberra. Research interests of the group are in breast cancer, gastrointestinal oncology, renal cell carcinoma, gynaecological oncology, gastrointestinal stromal tumour, neuroendocrine tumours, melanoma, new drug development in targeted therapies, psychosocial oncology, tissue banking/biomarker development and patterns of care.
Trainees will be involved in the teaching of ANU medical students and Basic Physician trainees. There will also be involvement in the academic activities of the Unit, including clinical review meetings, morbidity and mortality meetings, Grand Rounds, research seminars and journal club. A series of tutorials are provided each year for trainees in medical oncology. There will be opportunities for clinical research and projects leading to presentations and publications. Trainees will be encouraged and supported to attend meetings and conferences.
Duties
Under limited direction of the Clinical Director you will:
1. Provide competent and efficient clinical management of oncology patients of the Canberra Health Services under the supervision and direction of Consultant Medical Oncologists. Including assessment and management in the outpatient clinics, management of acute presentations, in-patient care of patients on on-call roster on weekends, management of patients on the chemotherapy suite, consultations and clinical handover.
2. Attendance at outpatient clinics at Calvary Public Hospital. While participate in the supervision, training and professional development of junior medical staff.
3. Demonstrate progress in training in the specialty including participation in the relevant teaching program and activities, timely completion of assessments and involvement in research.
4. Participate in the Medical Oncology after-hours and on-call roster & in the general medical registrar on- call roster after-hour rosters which entails evening, and weekend shifts.
5. Contribute to clinical audit activities, including review of patients for the morbidity and mortality committee and participate in changes that improve quality and safety of patient care.
- Undertaking other duties as directed, within the approved scope of clinical practice.
7. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements/Qualifications:
Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Success in FRACP part 1 or a minimum of Postgraduate year four, or above, and previous experience or training in a hospital-based internal medicine training program.
- Demonstrate commitment to training and continuing professional development including participation in relevant teaching programs, activities, and feedback opportunities,
- The successful applicant will need to be available for occasional weekend and after-hours work.
- To be eligible for this position you must be PGY 4 + prior to the commencement of the role.

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.
You will need to understand how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
You will need to fulfil the responsibilities of this role as detailed in the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and other related frameworks.
Please note prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to:
Obtain a Compliance Certificate from OMU (Occupational Medicine Unit) relating to assessment, screening & vaccination processes against specified infectious diseases.
- Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
