The Role
Do you have what it takes to lead and implement new policy to help set the future strategic direction of Defence technology and strategic capabilities?
Do you have aptitude for or experience in policy development, an eye for identifying strategic implications in complex material, building relationships within and beyond Defence and working under limited direction?
Strategy, Policy, and Industry Group is currently looking for individuals to fill vacancies in a number of our Divisions.
You will have an interest in working in the national security environment, with an understanding of technology, policy, national security, or international relations.
These roles would suit professionals with a desire to inform policy analysis & development, provide advice for Defence senior leaders and the Government, and support relevant international partnerships and engagement.
As the range and nature of work in Defence is so diverse, so are the different work environments that our employees are located in.

About our Team
Strategic Policy Division shapes strategic direction for Defence, addresses future capability challenges with policy and advice, and works at the intersection of technology, national security and international relations.
We address strategic risks and collaborate across Whole-of-Government to ensure strategy, capability and resources are aligned to the priorities in the National Defence Strategy. Our purpose is to deliver meaningful policy, guidance, and strong collaborative relationships to enable Government to make sound decisions.
AUKUS Advanced Capabilities Division is driving development of next generation technologies for the ADF under Pillar Two of the AUKUS Partnership. We focus on quantum technologies, artificial intelligence, electronic warfare, undersea warfare, hypersonics and cyber.
We work across Defence, other Government agencies and with our US and UK counterparts. Our goal is to integrate and simplify the frameworks that underpin our technology and capability systems giving us access to options beyond what any one nation could achieve alone.
Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidates are proactive team players with excellent judgement, leadership and initiative. We’re looking for great communicators (written and verbal) with adept stakeholder and staff management skills.
Both Strategic Policy Division and Australian, United Kingdom and United States (AUKUS) Advanced Capabilities Division deliver considered, clear and productive policy, and policy advice.
The Division's cover capabilities including long range strike, undersea warfare, autonomous systems, quantum technologies, artificial intelligence, electronic warfare, hypersonics, cyber and consider sensitive and emerging technologies.
Key responsibilities include:
- Aligning Defence’s strategic capabilities with Government direction and objectives.
- Representing Defence’s equities within whole-of-Government and international forums.
- Supporting Defence’s international engagement on strategic policy relating to strategic capabilities.
- Developing policy to enable the integration of strategic capabilities and technologies into the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
