TREE MAINTENANCE WORKER

TITLE: TREE MAINTENANCE WORKER
DEPARTMENT: Electric Distribution
DESCRIPTION:
Under supervision, maintains City-owned trees for public safety; proximity to power lines; plants, prunes, trims, removes and cares for City trees.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
THE FOLLOWING DUTIES ARE NORMAL FOR THIS TITLE. THESE ARE NOT TO BE CONSTRUED AS EXCLUSIVE OR ALL-
INCLUSIVE. OTHER DUTIES MAY BE REQUIRED AND ASSIGNED.

  • Attendance and dependability.
GENERAL TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
WHILE FOLLOWING TASKS ARE NECESSARY FOR THIS POSITION, THEY ARE NOT AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE DUTIES OF THIS POSITION AND MAY ALSO BE PERFORMED BY OTHER EMPLOYEES.

  • Maintain City trees for public safety by performing tree pruning and removal functions; remove dead and damaged limbs and trees.
  • Perform brush chipping and stump grinding.
  • Operate and maintain tree trimming equipment including trucks, bucket truck, chain saws, pole saws, stump grinder and chipper.
  • Perform traffic control to ensure safety of cars, pedestrians and tree crew in traffic areas.
  • Plant, water, fertilize and care for City trees.
  • Keep record of work performed for Tree City USA.
  • Respond to emergency calls regarding fallen trees or limbs both during and outside normal work hours.
  • Inspect trees for potential faults, insects and diseases.
  • Other duties as assigned.

GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
LANGUAGE ABILITY AND INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other City employees and the public.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Has ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as sitting, standing, walking, bending, climbing, twisting, squatting, reaching overhead, grasping, lifting, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling and handling of objects; is on feet most of shift.
  • Has the potential of frequently lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Has ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Has normal eyesight and depth perception, with or without correction.
  • Hears normal tones, with or without correction.
  • Has ability to work within environment described above.
COGNITIVE:
  • Work under supervision and cooperatively with other employees.
  • Ability to listen, understand and communicate information.
  • Basic understanding of math.
  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility in work environments, performing a variety of frequently changing tasks
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D.
  • Six months of landscape or tree maintenance experience preferred.
  • Must obtain CDL Class B within 3 months of employment.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a thorough background check, and successfully complete a physical exam and drug test.

Schedule:
  • 8-hour shift - Typical hours - 4 day week schedule, 10-hour workday, Monday Thursday , 6am-4pm.
  • Day shift
  • Monday to Thursday
