JOB SUMMARY:
The City of Birmingham is looking for a well-qualified, motivated Tire Shop Supervisor responsible for managing all phases of tire repair at a large automotive shop facility for a fleet of vehicles that exceeds 1000 units. Incumbents in this job class are expected to coordinate and supervise the activities of workers engaged in servicing, repairing, and replacing tires and rims on a variety of light to heavy duty equipment such as automobiles, heavy trucks, tractors, graders, etc. Not only are Tire Shop Supervisors expected to supervise this work, employees are also expected to perform preventative maintenance which involves examining damaged, defective, flat tires or rims to determine the feasibility of repairing or discarding them. Employees in this job class receive specific work assignments through work orders and must determine the best approach to performing duties. Tire Shop supervisors work is reviewed by senior staff through inspection of project outcomes, review of reports, and periodic project update meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To be considered for employment in this position, a candidate must possess the following:

Driver's License. (may be required to obtain Class B CDL within 180 days).

Experience in diagnosis, repair, and replacement of tires and wheels on cars and medium-duty trucks using both jacks and pneumatic lifts.

Coursework or experience tracking inventory (e.g., tires, rims, weights, valve stems) using a computer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preferred qualifications are experiences, education, and/or other job-related qualifications considered to be highly desirable by Merit System agencies. The preferred qualifications may be used by the hiring agency to identify applicants to invite to participate in subsequent selection processes.
JOB DUTIES:
Typical job duties include, but are not necessarily limited to:

Prepares, monitors, and administers departmental or organizational budget by reviewing spending trends, expenditure reports, analyzing financial data and ensuring expenditures are within annual budgetary limits.

Procures and/or manages inventory (i.e., supplies and equipment) to ensure the products and services are available to meet the operational needs of each department.

Performs preventative maintenance and minor repair work on equipment and rolling stock.

Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.

Repairs tires on equipment/rolling stock using appropriate tools and apparatus.

Reviews and monitors budget reports and expenditure information in order to maintain expenses within the established budget.

Evaluates need for supplies, equipment, and services and processes orders for purchase in compliance with established purchasing and requisitioning regulations and procedures.

Coordinates with employees and supervisors in other departments to schedule field or shop service.

Salary range: $43,347 - $67,246 (starting salary is commensurate with education and experience)

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGES:

Knowledge of basic preventive maintenance (e.g., check fuels, fluids, oil levels) for cars and light trucks.

Knowledge of budgetary principles and procedures, and encumbrances/expenditures such as revenues, expenditures, and appropriations involved in establishing and maintaining budgets.

Knowledge of departmental inventory control software.

Knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures regarding hazardous materials (Hazmat).

Knowledge of principles involved in the management of staff/personnel.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is conducted indoors in an office setting and auto shop facility setting and may involve the use of standard office equipment such as computer, phone and copier. Work in the auto shop facility involves exposure to contaminates such as dust, gasoline, and/or caustic chemicals.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands of the position may vary from sedentary with occasions of walking and standing for brief periods. Work may involve lifting or carrying items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs. as well as stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, or walking.
