Systems Programmer 1 located in Juneau!

This position is in the General Government Unit (GGU) at a Range 20.

What You Will Be Doing:
The primary focus of this Long-Term Non-Perm (LTNP) mainframe developer position is to provide support for the mainframe documentation project; document and write within the Computer Aided Software Engineering (CA:GEN) 4th Generation Common Business Oriented Language (COBOL) platform for the mainframe; document and update Data Base 2 Structured Query Language (DB2 SQL); and support the ongoing needs of the mainframe tax and benefits system for the Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

The System Programmer 1 plays a key role in advancing an important capital project and provides essential support to lead mainframe developers in maintaining and enhancing mission-critical systems.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:
This position is stationed at the Department of Labor and Workforce Development building in Juneau, Alaska. The building is located along the waterfront, next to the Seawalk and Overstreet Park. As a member of the IT team, the successful candidate will work collaboratively with other members of the team. Meetings are held once a week to facilitate communications and keep staff up-to-date.

Who We Are Looking For:
  • Computer Languages: Knowledge of computer languages and their applications to enable a system to perform specific functions.
  • Requirements Analysis: Knowledge of the principles and methods to identify, analyze, specify, design, and manage functional and infrastructure requirements; includes translating functional requirements into technical requirements used for logical design or presenting alternative technologies or approaches.
  • Software Development: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools for designing, developing, and testing software in a given environment.
  • Technical Documentation: Knowledge of procedures for developing technical and operational support documentation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in:


  • Hardware: Knowledge of specifications, uses, and types of computer or computer-related equipment.
  • Infrastructure Design: Knowledge of the architecture and typology of software, hardware, and networks, including LANS, WANS, and telecommunications systems, their components and associated protocols and standards, and how they operate and integrate with one another and with associated controlling software.
  • Operating Systems: Knowledge of computer network, desktop, and mainframe operating systems and their applications.
  • Systems Integration: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures for installing, integrating, and optimizing information systems components.

Equivalent to those typically gained by:
Training in computer science, information technology, or system administration – or a similar field or professional experience – that provided knowledge of systems, networking software, hardware, protocols, and scripting/automation tools.

Special Note:
“Competencies” means a combination of interrelated knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that enable a person to act effectively in a job or situation.

“Typically gained by” means the prevalent, usual method of gaining the competencies expected for entry into the job.

“Training” means the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through instruction.
