Prevention Educator/ Advocacy Gallup

Work Description and Objectives: The Prevention Educator is responsible for addressing the root causes of sexual violence in Mc Kinley County by promoting SAS and our mission toward ending violence and supporting survivors of violence. To assist community members in finding ways they can end sexual violence. Deliver violence prevention programming and outreach services throughout Mc Kinley County through school-based youth trainings, community groups, workshops, and other strategies on preventing sexual assault abuse, informed consent, dating violence and other related topics. Provide survivor advocacy resources and referrals for survivors of sexual assault as well as participating in the 24/7 on-call rotation.
Prevention Education
· Serve as community educator in Mc Kinley County for any of SAS’s violence prevention and outreach programs.
· Promote and provide presentations to various sectors of the community; prioritizing outreach to middle schools, high schools, local community colleges and social service agencies in Mc Kinley County about teen dating violence, sexual violence, primary prevention and community response.
· Provide survivor advocacy resources and referrals for survivors of sexual assault as needed or requested.
· Stay up to date on research-based sexual violence prevention strategies and programs.
· Research effective prevention practices best suited with community readiness and needs.
· Copy and prepare written materials, supplies, etc. for each program session.
· Enter Community Education and Outreach Program data into Vela. Complete data entry daily for all programs.
· Become knowledgeable of the ways in which collaborating with people who have experienced trauma, and SA, impacts employees and proactively work to limit the effects of compassion fatigue by seeking supervision when common signs are present.
· Other responsibilities or tasks as assigned by Associate Director or supervisor.
SANE Advocacy/ On-call
· Participate in 24/7 on- call rotation at least 1 weekend a month.
  • Advocate will arrange for coverage if they are unable to cover designated shifts.
· Provide crisis intervention and comprehensive services to include emotional support, arrangement of transportation; accompany victims to medical, legal and or/law enforcement appointments, assist in securing protective orders, emergency food and/or shelter resources.
· Ensure survivors of sexual abuse receive sensitive, confidential care.
· Provide crisis information and assistance to victim and family concerning services available to them including counseling, Crime Victims Reparation Commission, as well as resources in the community.
· Provide information concerning law enforcement and the legal process.
· Work directly with victims to ensure that expressed needs are advocated and presented to personnel at intervening agencies.
Other Work Requirements
· Monthly, quarterly, and year end reports will be completed per the grant funders requirements.
· Resources will be researched and kept up to date regularly for the area we serve.
· Travel out of town with other staff members for presentations and or meetings.
· Submit all required SAS forms in a timely manner, i.e., mileage forms, timesheets, etc.
· Represent organization in professional manner at all required meetings and events.
· Support SAS fundraising events and other relevant activities used for the promotion of SAS sexual violence prevention, and other areas as determined by supervisor.
· Actively participate in monthly advocate meetings, staff meetings, case reviews, SA conferences, and SAS fundraising events.
  • Works collaboratively, cooperatively, and in coordination with fellow team members and with others in the organization, treats them with respect, courtesy, and consideration, and shows understanding and the appropriate support of other team members to help get the job done.
  • Participate in weekly supervision with direct supervisor. SAS values staff development and utilizes Feedback, Situational Leadership, reflection, and other resources in supervising all staff. In supervision, staff is expected to share openly about aspects of the work and provide/receive work related feedback.
Minimum requirements: Must be at least 21 years old and have an AA Degree in Human Services, related field or experience. Comfortable with public speaking; Ability to work with diverse groups of people; Excellent computer skills; Experience in the fields of sexual assault or domestic violence a plus. Some evenings, weekends and travel required. Must successfully complete a 40-hour advocacy training and pass a background check.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour
