Parent and Community Engagement Specialist

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Under direction of the school administrators, the position exists to coordinate communication and activities in the assigned schools among the teachers, parents, and community and school administrators. The Parent and Community Engagement Specialist will function as part of the network of assistance for students and families. The employee performs most work independently and performance is evaluated by results. Performs related work as directed.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as liaison between student, home, school, and community resources such as family services agencies.
  • Works with professional personnel, students, and parents to help students be successful in school by making available information to increase the understanding of specific elements that may be attributed to problems related to emotional, physical, academic, and economic areas.
  • Interprets requirements related to school activities/outreach programs that support parental involvement; supports and works with Social Workers, Counselors, and community agencies that can contribute resources to assist families as needed.
  • Plans and provides activities related to parent involvement that would enhance the school's climate.
  • Cooperates with administrators in implementing the parent involvement program according to state and federal guidelines.
  • Works with parents and teachers in improving the achievement level of students by assisting parents and volunteers in locating learning activities; disseminates information regarding parent involvement goals and objectives books and tutorial services to reinforce skills.
  • Participates in on-going professional development by attending workshops, lectures and institutes on specific subjects to enhance job performance.
  • Provides information regarding the various school programs available to meet the needs of children.
  • Works in schools to ensure homeless children and families' needs are identified and steps are taken to meet those needs through school resources and community agencies.
  • Disseminates information regarding parent involvement goals and objectives, books, tutorial services to reinforce skills.
  • Conducts information sessions and workshops for parents, school staff and community members.
  • Makes home visits as needed and works with parents regarding ways in which they can help their children achieve challenging state standards.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Must possess Knowledge and understanding of the parent involvement component in Title I schools.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, students, teachers, administrators, and community based-organizations.
  • Must possess the ability to read and prepare correspondence, reports, forms, research papers, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to rules of punctuation, grammar and style.
  • Must possess ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must possess excellent leadership, supervisory, management, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Must possess the ability to speak effectively before large groups and high level executives.
  • Must possess skill in working with considerable independence to carry out tasks to completion.
  • Must possess skill in performing duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic; ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must possess ability to access, operate and maintain various software applications; ability to read, update and maintain various records and files.
  • Must possess the ability to work flexible hours necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
  • Must possess considerable knowledge of recent developments, current literature, and informational resources in the field of parent involvement.
  • Must possess expert knowledge of basic school district work policies and guidelines and expert knowledge of departmental practices and procedures.
Education / Certifications / Experience
Bachelor's degree in counseling, social work, psychology, education, or a related field and some experience in providing services to school-aged children and/or families, or any combination of education, training, and experience that would provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and ability. Must possess a valid Virginia Driver's license.

Salary Range: From/To
Up to $62.094 Per Year

Salary will be based on job-related creditable years of full-time, verified work experience. Entry-level salary will be awarded at the time of hire. Upon the return of employment verification forms from the candidate's current and previous employers, the salary will be adjusted if creditable full-time experience is confirmed.
