Summary
  • JOB SUMMARY
      Responsible for on-going surveillance and interpretation of a patient’s cardiac rhythm while on a cardiac monitor. Monitor Technician provides RNs and/or clinicians with immediate notification of any changes in cardiac rhythms. The technician delivers telemetry to intermediate units and performs monitor hook-up/discharge, patient preparation, and teaching related to the monitor.
  • DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
      Overall performance rating of below indicated essential job duties:
    • Responsible for assisting RNs and/or clinicians with cardiac monitoring, interpretation, measures, documentation and procedures related to cardiac monitoring; Monitor and record physiological measurements including obtaining six second strip as indicted by patient condition/physician order; Responsible for identification of patient arrhythmias, abnormalities or significant changes from baseline and reporting on the condition of patient to the RN/provider or appropriate supervisor; Initiates and discontinues monitoring equipment on admission, transfer, or discharge; Performs configuration as necessary; Care and maintenance of cardiac equipment.
    • Documents and interprets patient’s heart rhythm and rate by utilizing telemetry recordings; Performs clerical duties related to admission, discharge, and documentation of patient information from the central monitoring unit; Maintains log books; Documents in the EMR
    • Receive, screen and coordinate telephone calls from patients, families and healthcare providers; Answers telephones and communicate clearly when receiving information from units or providers; Uses clear, complete and timely communication with the unit team when delivering information about changes in patient rhythm.
    • Orients and mentors new team members; Serves as a resource for training and troubleshooting to both the central monitoring unit and clinical areas; Troubleshoots monitors with nursing team and contacts Bio-med as appropriate; Are required to give report to oncoming shift.
    • Prioritizes and organizes work assignment and adjusts priorities based on changing situations; Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work in a stressful environment; Maintains and stocks all designated equipment/supplies, including telemetry monitors; Replaces defective equipment and reports failures to Bio-med.
    • Develops a rapport and cooperative relationship with nursing and clinical team as well as responds to questions/requests from healthcare providers; Adheres to confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patients, clinicians, employees, and visitors.
  • EDUCATION/LICENSE/ CERTIFICATIONS/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
      Minimum requirement:
      • High School diploma or GED
      • Successful completion of clinical education/dysrhythmia classroom and on-the-job training program that is provided upon starting position with our training program and exam prior to completion of orientation.
      • Maintain current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
      Preferred qualifications:
      • Experience as a monitor technician and demonstrated skill in recognizing abnormal cardiac rhythms
      • Completion of a formal training program in allied health or a healthcare field such as medical assisting, EMT, or similar field
  • WORKING ENVIRONMENT
    • Constantly works near moving mechanical parts
    • Constantly exposed to blood and/or body fluids and infection.
    • Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
    • Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    • Occasionally required to maintain in a stationary position (standing or sitting).
    • Frequently required to walk and move about.
    • Frequently required to operate a computer and other equipment.
    • Frequently required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments/devices.
    • Constantly required to lift and/or move items up to 10 pounds.
    • Frequently required to lift and/or move items up to 25 pounds.
    • Occasionally required to lift and/or move items up to 100 pounds.
    • Constantly required to communicate with patients and other care team requiring talking and hearing.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
