Job Overview
The Medical Assistant (MA) provides clinical support to patients and assists care providers with clinical and administrative support.

Qualifications
  • EDUCATION High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • EQUIVALENCY One year of experience in a direct health care role may substitute for graduation from a Medical Assistant program.
  • CERTIFICATION(S) - BLS for Healthcare Providers / CPR.
Responsibilities
POPULATION SPECIFIC CARE
  • a.) Neonate - <30 days
  • b.) Infancy - >30 days to 1yr
  • c.) Toddlers - >1yr to 3yrs
  • d.) Pre-Schoolers - >3yrs to 5yrs
  • e.) School age - >5yrs to 13yrs
  • f.) Adolescent - >13yrs to 18yrs
  • g.) Adult - >18yrs to 65yrs.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.
  • Prepares patients for the health care visit by directing and/or accompanying them to the examining room; providing examination gowns and drapes; arranging examining room instruments, supplies, and equipment. Conducts quality checks.
  • Verifies patient information by interviewing patient; reviewing and/or recording medical history; taking vital signs; confirming purpose of visit or treatment. Reports areas of concern to next care provider.
  • Supports patient care delivery by assisting health care providers during examinations; preparing laboratory specimens; performing basic testing; disposing of contaminated supplies; cleaning or preparing for sterilization of medical instruments; administering medications per policy and procedures; telephoning prescriptions to pharmacies and other duties within scope.
  • Assists in balancing workloads, coordinates and maintains clinic flow by coordinating with providers, and monitoring patient flow.
  • Provides phlebotomy.
  • Completes lab test follow up and medical record documentation.
  • Prepares and completes medical record for visit by recording patient information, treatment, and test results. Assists with patient “My Chart” enrollment.
  • Participates in the standardized education of patients through written instructions and answering questions as directed by provider.
  • Independently initiates referrals and insurance pre-authorizations.
  • Provides general office support including phone and fax management.
  • Serves as the preceptor for new staff, including orientation, education, skill validation, tracking, assessment and monitoring progress.
  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following, and enforcing standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
  • Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping patient care information confidential.
  • Adheres to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and The Joint Commission standards.

  • Guidelines: Guidelines are generally numerous, well established, and directly applicable to the work assignment. Work assignment and desired results are explained by general oral or written instructions.
  • Complexity: Duties assigned are generally repetitive and restricted in scope but may be of substantial intricacy. Employee primarily applies standardized practices.
  • Decision Making: Decisions or recommendations on non-standardized situations are limited to relating organizational policies to specific cases. Brings non-routine issues to supervisor. Problems that are not covered by guidelines or are without precedent are taken up with the supervisor.
  • Communications: Contacts with the public or employees where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged, gathered, or presented and some degree of discretion and judgment are required within the parameters of the job function.
  • Supervision Received: Under normal supervision, within a standardized work situation, the employee performs duties common to the line of work without close supervision or detailed instruction. Work product is subject to continual review.
Physical Requirements
Ability to Perform Essential Functions of the Job
  • Will frequently stand/walk up to 12 hours per day.
  • Will frequently use hands while keyboarding and writing.
  • Will frequently sit up to 2-4 hours per day while accessing computer, talking on the telephone, and while attending meetings.
  • Will occasionally lift/force exerted up to 100 pounds.
  • Constantly uses sight in performance for daily job duties.
  • Constantly uses hearing in performance for daily job duties.
  • Able to assist or assume direct patient care as census directly permits. Exposure to unsteady or falling patient: In the course of transferring a patient, may encounter a patient who falls or loses balance, causing employee to fall and/or bear the full weight of a patient.

Salary Information

Hourly Rate of Pay: $20.06
