Summary Statement
Boise Public Library is where everyone in Boise goes to grow. Boise Public Library has 2 new branch supervisor positions available! One will supervise the circulation team at the main library, the other will supervise branch employees at Cole and Ustick. This role:
- Works with the manager to develop and implement plans, procedures and initiatives, and assists the manager in addressing facility issues and maintenance.
- Provides customer service, training and direction to library users and staff members.
- Provides leadership, hiring, onboarding, development and supervision for library assistants and pages. This position works under limited supervision.

This position works occasional evenings and weekends, to provide coverage for the stellar customer service our library system offers.
The preferred candidate will have experience scheduling teams across shifts, excellent conflict resolution skills, judgment to resolve customer account issues, and success training team members on new technology.

Essential Functions
Performs the full range of duties (with appropriate managerial review), including hiring, evaluating, promoting and assigning duties; correcting inappropriate actions or behavior through communication and coaching, initiating discipline or termination as needed; and overseeing employees or a group. Performs the tasks of subordinate employees, as needed.
Works with the manager and employees to meet the goal of being one library with many locations. Leads day-to-day operations of the division, including managing staff, implementing procedures, resolving conflict and handling escalated library user issues. Serves as the acting division manager in the manager's absence, ensuring smooth operations and upholding customer service policies.
Provides internal and external customer service, including reference and reader's advisory at service desks, over the phone and via email. Troubleshoots technology issues for staff, library users and presenters.
Assists in maintaining public spaces to meet the needs of library users and employees in order to maximize usability and continuously improve the library user experience.
Requirements
Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
- Master’s degree in library science or related field and
- 3 years of demonstrated increased responsibility and leadership over time in a public library setting, or
- an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Knowledge of:
- public library services, collections, practices and procedures;
- integration of technology and public services;
- supervisory practices;
- public access catalogues and office software;
- conflict management techniques; and
- proficiency with office software and ILS systems.
Ability to:
- provide excellent customer service to internal and external library users;
- use excellent communication and time management skills;
- supervise and motivate a support staff;
- interpret and apply policies and procedures;
- evaluate situations and determine appropriate course of action;
- communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; and
- perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
- Master's degree in library and information science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university and
- 5 years of progressively responsible library experience including supervising employees and providing direct customer service.

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds and frequently pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach and grasp. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.
Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria and chemicals.
This position works: weekends and evenings, as necessary.
