Environmental Geologist

The Environmental Geologist is responsible for the field implementation of work plans during conventional soil and/or groundwater investigations and during emergency responses and will work closely with clients, regulators and CTEH personnel to evaluate soil and groundwater environmental concerns. The Environmental Geologist will typically prepare written investigation plans, oversight of subcontractors and personnel during subsurface drilling, installation of groundwater monitoring wells and sample collection of soil, groundwater, vapor and surface water samples. They will provide technical advice and documentation to the client and coordinate with field personnel, Data Managers, and the Quality Department to ensure quality environmental data collection and reporting. They will provide onsite coaching and training to field personnel to ensure necessary tasks are conducted competently and to a high degree of quality. They will work closely in the development and maintenance of CTEH’s Environmental Response Program and with CTEH ER leadership to ensure environmental response preparedness. They will support client preparedness through training and participation in exercises and drills, as needed, as well as coordinate with the Sales team to grow CTEH’s environmental services. The Environmental Geologist will be available for emergency responses and may require frequent, extended travel, or serve as on-call as part of overall response readiness. The Environmental Geologist will report to the Director of Response Consultants.

ACTIVITIES/TASKS/SCOPE
  • Supports all programs within the CTEH Emergency Response Division on emergency response and traditional environmental remediation projects.
  • Performs as an Environmental Geologist on Environmental Response Projects with limited oversight.
  • May assume key environmental roles during responses and exercises, coordinating closely with client and agency personnel.
  • Prepares soil/groundwater/vapor intrusion written work plans and ensures they are followed in the field.
  • Soil logging using the Unified Soil Classification System.
  • Coordinates with Project Managers, Data Managers, and Quality Dept. to ensure data deliverables are timely and of high quality.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of CTEH’s Environmental Response Program.
  • Supports internal preparedness for environmental responses, including the provision of environmental response training, identification of equipment needs, and development of document templates.
  • Provides training and other technical consulting to clients relative to his/her expertise.
  • Must be able to interpret large data sets to achieve regulatory cleanup goals.
  • Performs such other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & CREDENTIALS
  • Bachelor of Science or Master’s degree in Geology, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, or equivalent, plus 5+ years of related field experience including soil and groundwater investigations, soil and groundwater remediation and long term monitoring of environmental projects
  • Advanced computer skills in a Windows-based platform
  • Significant project management experience, preferably in emergency response
  • Must have a current RPG, LPG or PE license (required)
  • Must have an OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER certification and current 8 hour annual certification (required)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
  • Ability to obtain DISA clearance
  • Ability to obtain TWIC clearance
  • Current driver’s license (required)
  • Ability to obtain a passport
  • Completion of all job specific training, client training and OSHA training requirements
  • Must be self motivated, organized, hard working and have strong written, communication and technical skills

  • Works in an office or remote environment when not deployed on an emergency response
  • Works outdoors and may be exposed to hot and cold environments and extreme weather conditions, including sunlit, rainy and windy conditions
  • Encounter environments presenting physical hazards of uneven ground, standing water, ditches, dusty conditions, rapidly moving transportation and remediation equipment, and physical stress associated with the wear of personal protective equipment
  • May work at altitudes greater than 5000 feet above sea level
  • May work in a setting with potential physical and chemical hazards; and Frequent, extended travel
