Summary of Job Duties:
The Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is responsible for providing overall direction, management, clinical leadership, and supervision for the University of Arkansas Counseling and Psychological Services. As a senior leader within the Division of Student Affairs – Student Well-being, which includes Medical Services, University Recreation + Wellness, and University Housing, the Director plays a crucial role in shaping and guiding mental health services.

This role is accountable for establishing the clinical vision, tools, processes, and methods necessary for departmental success, while ensuring that policies and practices align with the values and strategic goals of the department, the Division of Student Affairs, and the University of Arkansas. Although the position is administratively focused, it also involves maintaining clinical care and managing caseload expectations.

The Director is dedicated to delivering the highest quality of mental health services to students, supporting the University's goal of prioritizing student learning by promoting the psychological well-being of the student body.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree from a regionally-accredited university in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, counselor education, social work or other closely related discipline
  • Current Arkansas licensure for independent practice as a counselor, social worker, psychologist, or similar mental health license, or ability to attain licensure for independent practice within six months of appointment
  • Evidence of a supervised internship or equivalent which included clinical assessment, counseling and crisis intervention, preferably with a diverse college-age population
  • At least five years of experience in an area of specialty that includes direct client mental health related care in a clinical and/or counseling setting
  • At least five years of clinical supervision experience
  • At least five years of demonstrated administrative and management experience in psychology, counseling, social work, or a closely related field
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctorate degree from a regionally-accredited university in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, counselor education, social work or other closely related discipline
  • Current Arkansas board approved supervision credentials – LPC-S for counselors, approval of supervisory status by the Arkansas Social Work Licensing Board for social workers, or approval of supervisory status by the Arkansas Psychology Board for psychologists
  • Experience addressing the needs of a diverse student population
  • Experience providing psychological assessment services
  • Experience with a clinical training program (doctoral internship, advanced practicum training or similar) in a college or university counseling center
  • More than five years of clinical supervision experience
  • More than five years of demonstrated administrative and management experience in counseling or a closely related field
  • Proven track record in recruiting and retaining exceptional clinical staff
  • Experience in a college or university mental health setting

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
  • Knowledge of mental health laws, and, to the extent applicable, Title IX and disability laws
  • Knowledge of the code of ethics for the American Psychological Association (APA), American Counseling Association (ACA), or the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and the standards of the International Accreditation of Counseling Centers (IACS)
  • A clinical expert who will serve as a spokesperson and advisor both on campus and in external representations of the University of Arkansas
  • Skilled in mentoring and coaching staff effectively
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills for engaging with diverse campus constituencies, including students, faculty, staff, and families
  • Demonstrated presentation skills and ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form with a variety of audiences including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and parents
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all client information as guided by all applicable laws and ethical codes regarding mental health service provision
  • Ability to implement data-driven decision-making, changing course as needed
  • Ability to articulate a vision and lead change management initiatives that align with national best practices in student mental health care
  • Ability to utilize technology to enhance the delivery and evaluation of programs and services
  • Ability to manage a limited clinical caseload

Additional Information:

Salary Information:
$140,000 - $160,000 (commensurate with education and experience)
