Provides a clean, safe environment in the building ensuring that it meets all Town, State and Federal safety, hygiene and environmental standards.
Preference will be given to current Town of Greenwich employees who are members of Teamsters Local 456.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma Required.
A minimum of six month's experience performing janitorial and related custodial work, including some experience in semi-skilled building maintenance activities.
Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle license to drive in the State of Connecticut.
Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability and knowledge in the use of all materials, methods, implements and devices used in cleaning operations.
Some knowledge of building trades, methods and tools.
Working knowledge of mechanical equipment used in heating and ventilating offices and similar buildings and ability to make routine repairs.
Knowledge of safety and health codes for kitchens, cafeterias, bathrooms and school or public buildings.
Ability to maintain records and files and complete reports.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, management and building occupants.
Proficiency in the operation and the care of vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, mop wringers, brushes, buckets, snow and leaf blowers, and other cleaning equipment and materials.
Ability to assign, prioritize and check the work of subordinates and to train and instruct employees in building cleaning operations.
Demonstrated skill to make routine operating repairs and adjustments to heating and ventilating equipment.
Basic knowledge of personal computers and Microsoft office and specific industry software as needed.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, keep accurate records and provide oral updates and complete written reports.
Physical Requirements:
Works in strenuous positions over long periods of time and carrying heavy materials alone.
Ability to climb, walk and bend.
Physical strength, agility required to work in all weather conditions, perform heavy cleaning and moving; climbs ladders, scaffolds, works from aerial lift.
Ability to lift over 80 lbs.; standing or kneeling for long periods of time; working or crawling in tunnels, attics, etc.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Vacuums, mops, dusts, scrubs, and waxes floors, cleans rooms, halls, furniture and washes windows. Moves and delivers furniture.
Cleans gutters and roof drains, repairs furniture, replaces ceiling tiles and floor tiles, clears sanitary and sink plumbing, replaces wall switches, receptacle sockets, ballasts, lamps, fuses, and diffusers, etc.; replaces filters, lubricates and cleans fans and motor bearings.
Cleans toilets and bathrooms, locker rooms, showers and pool deck areas. Washes dust mops.
Maintains a clean and safe environment.
Sets up areas for meetings, assemblies, exhibits, athletic programs and other activities.
Transports supplies and equipment
Sweeps sidewalks and secures buildings. Removes snow from entrances, exits and sidewalks.
Conserves energy consumption, wherever possible.
Drives a truck or other vehicle occasionally in pick-up and delivery of various articles.
Participates in emergency evacuations, secures, abates and reports serious occurrences and unsafe situations.
Performs related work as directed.
Ensures all work is completed in a satisfactory manner and building is clean, safe and prepared for the arrival of the public.
Communicates both in written and verbal format, any issues related to work performance or behavior of custodians on their shift.
Performs minor and routine adjustments to heating and ventilating equipment in order to keep it in good operating condition and to maintain comfortable temperatures in all parts of the buildings; periodically cleans and services, pumps and related equipment.
Repairs minor plumbing defects in toilets, basins, drains, and drinking fountains; makes minor electrical repairs, replaces fuses, burned-out bulbs, switches, ballasts and other related equipment; makes minor repairs to drywall, flooring.
Reports emergency repairs to Head Custodian and/or Manager/Foreman
Supports Town policies and philosophies and performs other related duties as required.
Note: Position is on call in the event
of extended illness or vacation of the Head and/or Lead Custodian for off-hour emergency situations including security and fire alarm call outs.
