The Field Operations Bureau is primarily responsible for traffic law enforcement, collision investigation, and motorist assists on 7,056.18 centerline miles (18,642 lane miles) of state highways and interstates. The bureau oversees eight geographical districts statewide, where commissioned troopers carry out the department's primary goal of providing a safe motoring environment for the public. This position is located in District Four which services in Adams, Ferry, Lincoln, Pend Oreille, Spokane, and Whitman Counties.

Duties
The Property and Evidence Custodian independently provides complex and direct support to commissioned personnel of District 4 and of other WSP bureaus operating within the district. This is accomplished through the retrieval, storage, and disposal or release of items placed into the District 4 Evidence System by commissioned officers. This position safeguards collected material/evidence in a systematic, organized and documented manner, following WSP procedures.

Our new teammate will be able to:


  • Receive property, cash and evidence into custody from law enforcement officers. Generate records appropriate to certify the chain of custody.
  • Maintains a secure property room and a fenced bullpen for vehicles entered into the evidence system.
  • Takes into custody found or abandoned property and researches proper ownership of property for proper release.
  • Travel to WSP evidence lockers located in seven counties to retrieve property and evidence. Collect evidence at crime and incident scenes, when requested.
  • Process various types of hazardous drugs for storage, transport to WSP Crime Lab and destruction locations. Coordinate statewide evidence destruction within Department of Ecology guidelines.

  • Receive and store various types of firearms for criminal and safekeeping purposes.
  • Conduct background checks utilizing local and state resources to ensure the appropriate release of firearms to properly qualified owners.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED Equivalent and
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted Washington State Driver's License.
