JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education
Skills and proficiency in oral and written grammar, communication, and basic
mathematics as acquired through official completion of high school or its equivalent. Current CPR certification. Must have completed a training program that is approved by the medical director and Governing Body and under the direction of a registered nurse. Focused on the operation of kidney dialysis equipment and machines, providing direct patient care, and communication and interpersonal skills, including patient -provider conflict management. And /or experienced more than 2 years and successful completion of a facility’s written exams over the required content an a skills checklist completed by observation of the PCT’s skill by a registered nurse. Successful completion of these exams and competency testing would not negate the need for these experienced PCT’s to achieve certification within the 18 month timeline. The program must include: Principles of dialysis, Care of patients with Kidney failure, Dialysis procedures and documentation including initiation, proper cannulation techniques, monitoring and termination of dialysis, possible complications of dialysis, Water treatment and dialysate preparation, infection control, and safety. Must be certified under a state certification program or a national commercially available certification program.
Experience
Preferred, but if no experience, would be required to complete education program and take a state certified exam within 18 months. On-the-job training for the dialysis process for technicians includes training in the use of PPE, microbiology associated with water treatment, universal precautions and the risks and hazards of not performing technician duties according to standards defined in policy/procedure including completion of the training program in preparation for state certification.

Normal hospital/outpatient environment. Frequent exposure to biological hazards. Frequent exposure to unpleasant fumes and odors. Close eye work. Hearing of normal and soft tones. Distinguish smells; distinguish temperatures by touch and proximity. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching. Lifting up to 100 pounds, carrying up to 40 pounds, pushing/pulling up to 350 pounds. Must pass the color blindness test.

JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for patient care as relates to initiation/termination of dialysis treatments, excluding administration of medications. Responsible to assist nursing personnel in the normal functions of the unit providing technical support and assistance in skills related to the dialysis process. Incumbents are subject to overtime and call-back as required by hospital.
