General Purpose
This City of Idaho Falls is currently looking for a Cemetery Maintenance Operator. In this position you will perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties related to the maintenance, upkeep, and grounds preparation within City cemeteries.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Lead Worker or Cemetery Sexton.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May provide close supervision to seasonal, part-time, or temporary Maintenance Helpers or Laborers.
Effective September 22, 2024 the starting salary for this position will be $17.99 per hour
Essential Functions
Performs day-to-day maintenance on cemetery grounds; prepares graves and maintains cemetery grounds; locates grave site according to section, lot, and plot numbers and marks off area to be excavated; removes sod from grave site, using shovel or power sod cutter; properly replaces sod.
Operates equipment, digs graves to specified depth, using shovel or backhoe; follows standard procedures in grave preparation.
Mows grass with hand or power gang mower; prunes shrubs and plants flowers on or around graves; removes debris from graves.
Performs general maintenance and upkeep of equipment by performing preventive maintenance and repairs; repairs and maintains sprinkler lines and heads; assists public in locating graves or by showing grave lots.
Follows established schedule to perform grounds watering operations; adjusts sprinkler heads to properly cover watering area(s); repairs or replaces water lines as needed.
May direct part-time or seasonal work crew in the performance of cemetery maintenance functions; ensures quality of work; may train crew members in proper operations and methods.
Assist the public in locating plots, answering questions and other items as needed; may work with vault company to follow up on headstone issues.
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Education and Experience:
A. Graduation from high school or equivalent
AND
B. One (1) year of experience performing above and related duties;
OR
C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working knowledge of cemetery maintenance, upkeep, and ground preparation practices and procedures; hazards and related safety procedures associated with above duties; cemetery lot identification system(s); basic grass, shrub, and tree care and grooming; light equipment operation, maintenance, and repair. Some knowledge of herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and proper application of the same; interpersonal communication skills.
Some skill in the operation of light equipment, such as backhoe, gang mower, front-end loader, tractor, etc.; some skill in the use of a variety of hand tools.
Ability to follow detailed work instructions in the performance of assigned duties; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to perform strenuous physical labor; ability to tolerate year-round weather extremes in the work environment; recognize and identify common weeds and pests; recognize and identify diseases common to turf and greenery; ability to develop effective working relationships with Supervisors, fellow employees and the public.
3. Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid drivers license.
Work Environment
Tasks require a variety of physical activities generally involving muscular strain. Physical demands may occur in activities related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting (50 lbs.), etc. Talking, hearing and seeing required in the daily performance of job duties. Exposure to weather, environmental hazards and dangers resulting from working around equipment. Mental application utilizes memory for details, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and creative problem solving.
