(Casual Hire) Educational Specialist

Description
**** Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawai’i may apply for Casual Hire appointments, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits provided to regular Board of Regents or Civil Service employees. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.

Duties and responsibilities of position include:


  • Clean and store tools and equipment and clean facilities after laboratory sessions, maintain a clean and safe environment in all assigned areas.
  • Assist In transportation of students to field trips or laboratory facilities. Maintain vehicle sanitation and the social distancing of passengers.
  • Assist in the fair sale and revenue collections of farm plant products following CDC guidelines. This includes sanitizing to prevent the spread or diseases and to ensure food safety. Keep accurate records, and secure/process monies collected.
  • Assist the faculty to teach and supervise student assistants, students, and volunteers, engaged in projects and/or research activities on- or off-farm to ensure all work is done efficiently, correctly, and safely. following proper protocols.
  • Research technologies to extend agriculture instruction to various instructional modalities (remote learning, hybrid teaching and virtual activities), while maintaining the integrity of instruction through active strategies including hands on, place-based, and project-based learning while adhering to CDC guidelines.
  • Develop educational materials and take-home kits to support distance education.
  • Provide services for on-farm lab sessions, including but not limited to, the purchase & preparation of supplies, tools and equipment, etc.
  • Assures a safe environment for participants.
  • Manage facilities, including greenhouses, crop shelters, shade houses, and storage areas.
  • Responsible for irrigation, crop maintenance (nutrition, weed and pest control).
  • Transport safely and store farm supplies (ie, fertilizer, soil, soilless mixes, etc).
  • Maintains berms, prepares fields, controls weeds and pests, layout plots, and clean up.
  • Operate tools, machinery, and equipment common to farming operations in a safe and correct manner (ie, tractors, trucks, trailers, forklift, etc).
  • Clean and store tools and equipment and clean facilities after laboratory sessions: maintain a clean and safe environment in all assigned areas.
  • Manage inventory, basic reporting and record keeping requirements (WPS training, pesticide application, inventory, etc).
  • Manually load and offload farm supplies and equipment
  • Support research, landscaping and demonstration projects, including planning, propagating plants, and planting and maintaining plants used in the research, landscape and demonstration.
  • Manage photo and video documentations of class activities, demonstrations sites and other projects.
  • Travel and transport students to field trips or laboratory facilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Horticulture, Agriculture, Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences, or related field and 3, year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities in farming, landscaping and management; or equivalent education/training or experience.
  • Ability to lift and carry supplies up to 50 pounds.
  • Possesses a valid driver's license.
  • Demonstrated ability in the use of spreadsheets.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with rapidly changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to gather, organize, and summarize facts and pertinent circumstances in a written report.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of University of Hawai?i, RCUH, and UHF financial management and human resources policies and procedures, and applicable business management system, (Kuali, People Soft, Touchnet, Banner).
  • Ability to work with and communicate effectively with a wide range of college employees and students.
  • Experience working in a community college environment
