The University of South Alabama’s department of Career Development is seeking to hire a Career Consultant I. Interested candidates should apply to be considered.


Essential Functions
These are the job duties required of the position.

Essential Functions
  • Supports and develops career readiness programming designed to assist students with the professional development process.
  • Coaches students on career readiness topics such as resume writing, career exploration, interviewing and job search strategy.
  • Responsible for leading engagement goals and objectives with assigned colleges/departments.
  • Maintains extensive appointment notes.
  • Maintains a good knowledge of the career development field.
  • Develops and continues to grow career knowledge and career guidance skills.
  • Supports students and graduates on a one-on-one basis providing tailored and impartial support on a variety of topics to include, what to do after receiving a degree and providing advice on how to prepare for a job interview.
  • Develops a vast knowledge of study, training, employment routes, recruitment processes, and labor market intelligence for different career sectors and subject areas, in order to support students and graduates, and to inform their work with academics.
  • Works collaboratively with academic departments/colleges.
  • Assists with specific career services, such as mock interviews, resume assistance, connecting students to internships and co-ops.
  • Understands the NACE competencies and assists students in developing and understanding their skills and level of career readiness.
  • Collaborates on a range of careers initiatives targeted at undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Works with faculty and academic staff to develop student-focused processes and assists in the development of goals and objectives for the department.
  • Identifies and responds to the career related issues and challenges of students through developing a range of activities to enhance students’ confidence and skills to move successfully into roles or further study following graduation.
  • Demonstrates high impact practices.
  • Maintains career maps for department/colleges partners.
  • Maintains knowledge of tools used for student interest and personality type and the ability to interpret results of such tools to assist students in making sound decisions.
  • Utilizes skills in evaluating a student’s academic interests and desires to formulate a plan designed to assist the student in achievement of specified career goals.
  • Communicates effectively, verbally and in writing to relate to others in a professional, helpful manner.
  • Multi-tasks and organizes, prioritizes, and follows multiple projects and tasks through to completion with an attention to detail.
  • Reads and interprets policies related to academic programs and student requirements for participation in various programs.
  • Works collaboratively with academic departments/colleges to deliver careers education within the curriculum.
  • Understands the NACE competencies and assists faculty in developing and integrating these competencies into their courses as appropriate with ILC, Level UP, etc.
  • Supports the University Level Up initiative by helping students to understand the skills they learn in their subject matter and understand how they can use this to articulate their strengths and attributes to employers.
  • Promotes career services on campus.
  • Supports the University’s Strategic plan and provides assistance in the Level Up Quality Enhancement Plan.
  • Works with other Career Services staff on boutique experiences as they relate to assigned colleges/departments.
  • Attends staff meetings and participates in on campus and state/national professional development opportunities.
  • Works within Education Advisory Board/Navigate South and Handshake to build outreach and communication campaigns.
  • Assists the Coordinator, Employer Development and Student Experience with on campus employer interviews.
  • Works independently while contributing to a team environment.
  • Analyzes problems, identifies solutions and takes appropriate action to resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with supervisors, other department staff, students and the public.
  • Regular and prompt attendance.
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required.
  • Related duties as required.
