BUS SHELTER AND AMENITIES ATTENDANT

Summary
The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of inspection, maintenance, and repair services at Chapel Hill Transit Bus Shelters and Transit Facilities.
Essential Functions

  • Maintains Chapel Hill Transit facilities including bus shelters, and bus stops. This includes:
    • Cleaning shelters, including pressure washing, emptying refuse, replacing glass, replacing solar light bulbs, and other minor repairs as needed.
    • Cleaning signs and shelters, including removing dirt, graffiti and/or stickers.
    • Conducting routine inspection of bus stops and shelters to ensure proper maintenance and cleanliness.
    • Replacing portable Bus Stop signs as requested.
    • Reporting the need for Tree Trimming services to ensure visibility of stops and preventing damage to transit vehicles.
    • Reporting unsafe and/or irreparable bus stop/bus shelter conditions that are beyond the staff member’s ability to repair.
  • Performs light building maintenance at Transit Facilities, such as repairing plumbing leaks, drywall repairs, and changing light bulbs.
  • Assists with maintaining an inventory of supplies for completing job duties. Submits requests for supplies as needed.
  • Operates a wide variety of power and hand tools in performing maintenance and repair services.
  • Drives official Town/Transit vehicle to job sites in a safe and efficient manner.
  • May assist with fueling and cleaning of bus and vehicle fleet as needed.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Physical Demands
The work is typically performed while standing or stooping and bending. The employee uses equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and may occasionally lift heavy objects.

Work Environment
The work is typically performed outside and individuals will be expected to work in conditions that include high temperatures in the summer and cold temperatures in the winter. Work is also performed in the Maintenance Shop. The work requires ability to work independently of direct supervision.

Minimum Qualifications
An equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the job. Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and get things done.

Knowledge of:
  • Trends and practices in Federal, State, and local building codes and safety regulations.
  • Standard practices, methods, materials and tools of the electrical, carpentry, interior finish.
  • Town and department policies and procedures.
  • Use of a variety of hand and bench tools, gauges, and test meters
  • Use of carpentry and electrical testing equipment.

Ability to:
  • Solve problems and make sound decisions.
  • Utilize a personal computer and various word processing and database software applications.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, customers, and supervisors.
  • Communicate effectively (orally and in writing) with coworkers and a diverse clientele.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb a ladder six feet off the ground.
  • Model behavior that is consistent with the Town values of RESPECT.
  • Read manuals, write a series of numbers and words to complete necessary paperwork.

Education
An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties.

Experience
12 months of experience in a related field.

Driving Requirements
Employee must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) permit within six months of employment. Obtaining a permit requires self-study and passing a written exam. Employee must obtain CDL BP license within one (1) year of employment. Chapel Hill Transit will provide the necessary training once employee obtains the CDL permit.
OTHER NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:
The employee uses equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. Ability to lift to 50 lbs. safely.
This position has been classified as safety sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Work Environment:
The work is typically performed outdoors or in the Maintenance Shop and requires the ability to work independently of direct supervision.

Certifications: A valid NC driver's license
