Analytical Chemist III - Hazardous Substance

Introduction
The DNREC-Remediation Section manages and assists with clean-up and restoration of chemical release sites, including brownfield and hazardous substances sites. It assists with voluntary cleanup and corrective actions.

Summary Statement
This is a lead level position responsible for analyses using LC-MS/MS, ICP-AES, ICP-MS, GC MS, segmented flow, and elemental analyzers for water quality surveillance and to assess emerging contaminants. Work completed in accordance with EPA Methods, Delaware Hazardous Substance Cleanup Act, State guidelines, rules, and regulations. Required to utilize information systems and statistics, create technical reports, troubleshoot instrument issues, develop Standard Operating Procedures and quality documents, and coordinate with coworkers to complete analyses. Conducts method development procedures to enhance the laboratory’s analytical capability. Plans, coordinates, and oversees laboratory analyses that will produce technically sound and legally defensible data.

Selective Requirement
Selective Requirements must be met in addition to the job requirements. Applicants who do not possess the selective requirement will not be qualified.
  • Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Science or related field and one year of experience analyzing environmental samples OR three years of experience using environmental analytical instrumentation such as automated organic carbon, segmented flow, discrete and elemental analyzers, gas or ion chromatography systems, or titration systems.

  • Prepares samples for instrument analysis, interprets instrument recordings and documents test results.
  • Uses analytical chemistry techniques including state-of-the-art instrumentation to gather data involving samples.
  • Analyzes laboratory data to determine quantity and quality of toxins, pathogens, chemical and biochemical constituents.
  • Prepares reports identifying samples, explains testing methods and documents findings and conclusions of analysis.
Job Requirements
JOB REQUIREMENTS for Analytical Chemist III
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  • Three years experience in generating and interpreting chemical test data by performing quantitative and qualitative statistical analysis.
  • Three years experience in selecting and modifying laboratory test methods and procedures.
  • Six months experience in conducting data review to ensure numerical input, calculations, formulas and interpretation of output is accurate, instruments were operating according to specifications, analytical procedures were followed and documentation is complete.
  • Three years experience in physical, organic, inorganic or analytical chemistry.
  • Three years experience in using laboratory equipment and instrumentation including calibration and maintenance.
  • Six months experience in technical report writing.
