Consultant Anaesthetist with an Interest in Chronic Pain Management
Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in Chronic Pain Management. This replacement post aims to provide cover for Anaesthetics and Pain Management Services. Cross-site working will be expected by the Directorate to meet service demands and the post holder may be required to work at any site across the Health Board.
The Anaesthetic Directorate provides a service for more than 30 theatres across the Health Board. The newly opened Grange University Hospital has been designed as a specialist critical care centre where the emergency department, all critical care services, all emergency surgery including vascular and trauma, and the 6000 delivery obstetric unit is based. This is supported by the local general hospitals of the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport, Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny and Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr in Ystrad Mynach.
The Chronic Pain Service has 2.6 WTE consultants supported by psychologist and clinical nurse specialists. The ethos of the service is in line with WAG guidance to facilitate self –management of chronic pain with multidisciplinary, patient centred care. Chronic Pain Services are provided across ABUHB sites and include face to face/remote consultations, interventional therapy, psychology and pain management programme. Teaching opportunities are available for intermediate, higher and advanced trainees in pain medicine. COVID-19 has led to significant changes in service delivery and there is an exciting opportunity for developing the service in line with local and national guidance.
The post holders will undertake 7 DCC and 3 SPA sessions per week split approximately 50:50 between Chronic Pain and Anaesthetics. Applicants are expected to take part in the Anaesthetics on-call rota at the Grange University Hospital. Rota frequency is currently 1 in 16 but can change with appointments and attracts a banding intensity supplement appropriate to service which will be agreed via job planning processes. Candidates are reminded of the Clinical Futures Programme and should expect agreed changes in their working patterns over forthcoming years. ABUHB is looking for capable applicants with skills to support the future health care models in ABUHB.
Facilities: shared office accommodation and secretarial support with full IT facilities will be provided.
