Professorship in the Study of Religion with a focus on contemporary religious developments
The Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies at the University of Bern seeks to appoint a full-time (100%) professor (open rank) in the study of religion with a focus on contemporary religious developments expected to begin on August 1, 2025. (Successor to Prof. Dr. Karénina Kollmar-Paulenz).
We expect candidates to have a broad research profile in the study of religion, with a focus on empirical research methods and contemporary religious and spiritual developments. The successful candidate must be willing to collaborate within the new department. Additionally, the candidate is expected to work closely with other institutions within the Faculty of Humanities and the University. Strong social competence, collegiality, and a constructive communication style are essential.

Depending on the candidate's qualifications, the position will be filled at the level of assistant professor with tenure track, associate professor, or full professor.
The successful candidate will have an internationally recognized record in research and teaching. They should have experience in securing external funding, particularly if appointed as an associate or full professor. For the hiring of an assistant professor an outstanding dissertation and an advanced new research project preparing the habilitation is expected (at least four peer-reviewed journal articles independent of the dissertation). Candidates for an associate or full professorship are required to have obtained the habilitation or an equivalent qualification (a second book or at least six peer-reviewed journal articles independent of the dissertation).
The teaching languages are German and English. Applicants are expected to acquire a good working knowledge of German within the first two years after their employment.
