Key responsibilities include the following:
• Lab support for student practical teaching sessions and to researchers (including sample preparation/testing, routine maintenance, and calibration of lab equipment).
• Ensure the functioning and management of all sterile labs (cell lab, and pharmaceutical product testing and release lab) as well as implement schedules for the service/maintenance/troubleshooting of all equipment
within the labs.
• Routinely update all lab SOPs in line with internal protocols and external regulations.
• Ensure correct QA/QC procedures are followed, calculations, and acceptability
• Ensure water points are sampled and tested timeously
• Ensure lab samples are tested using current pharmacopeias/SOPs for 'wet' chemistry and instrumental techniques (HPLC, IR, UV etc.), as appropriate
• Initiate sample out-of-specification reports, failing results, and equipment calibration/validation before use.
• Ensure samples after analysis are discarded in the waste area
• Performs duties deemed necessary by superiors (senior technician and HOD) and ensures compliance to limits on analytical reports.
Requirements:
• A BSc (honors) in Chemistry/ MSc degree in the pharmaceutical sciences.
• Must have demonstrable competency in quality management systems (QMS) in pharmaceutical SAHPRA-accredited approved laboratory spaces.
• A minimum of 1-2 years of experience with the use and troubleshooting of highly specialized pharmaceutical industry instruments and drug compounds.
• Knowledge of pharmaceutical raw materials including QA/QC of FPPs.
• Knowledge of HPLC, GC, and pharmaceutical quality analysis.

Preferences:
• A Masters in the pharmaceutical sciences or honor in chemistry with industrial QMS experience
• A person who can work under pressure in a multidisciplinary environment and sometimes late hours where necessary
• Ability to lift heavy loads i.e. equipment, gas cylinders, and boxes
• Experience within a validated clean lab environment
• HPLC experience in the Pharmaceuticals Quality Control Laboratory will be an advantage
