Job description

The South African Research Chair Initiative (SARCh I) is a strategic intervention focused on increasing scientific research capacity through the development of human capacity and new knowledge generation (http://www.nrf.ac.za/division/rcce/instruments/research-chairs). The UJ-hosted SARCh I Chair for Welfare and Social Development is vacant, and we are looking for an excellent scholar to take up the prestigious position. The successful candidate will lead a research programme and projects that contribute towards enhancing welfare and social development research via UJ, impacting locally and internationally, and aligning with strategic priority areas of the state, community-based entities and the academy. The SARCh I Chair in Welfare and Social Development is linked to the Centre for Social Development in Africa (CSDA) which conducts research on poverty, inequality and vulnerability with a focus on women, children, youth, and people with disabilities, and monitoring and evaluation of developmental social welfare policies and services.
In line with the requirements of the SARChi programme:
The selected candidate will be required to draft a full research proposal outlining a five-year research agenda for review and approval by the National Research Foundation (NRF). The successful candidate will be expected to dedicate time to drive the research programme and supervise Masters and Doctoral students as well as mentoring Post-Doctoral Research Fellows (PDRFs).

Minimum requirements

  • Ph D (in Development Studies, Social Work, Sociology or allied discipline).
  • International leader in the field
  • Excellent research and publishing record.
  • NRF rating.
  • Experience in supervising postgraduate students.
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:
  • Track record of successful fundraising.
  • Knowledge of budgets and financial planning.
  • Team-building skills.
  • Strong networking skills.
Recommendations:
  • Experience in working with university-based research entities.
  • Interest in 4IR and AI debates.
