The Onyx Research Data Platform organization represents a major investment by GSK R&D and Digital & Tech, designed to deliver a step-change in our ability to leverage data, knowledge, and prediction to find new medicines. We are a full-stack shop consisting of product and portfolio leadership, data engineering, infrastructure and Dev Ops, data / metadata / knowledge platforms, and AI/ML and analysis platforms, all geared toward:

The Application Engineer II will contribute to the technological advancement of GSK, focusing on the development and support of data-driven applications. This role requires a solid foundation in software engineering with an emphasis on hands-on technical work. The ideal candidate will be involved in the development, deployment, and maintenance of applications that meet the needs of our scientific user base. Responsibilities include collaborating with cross-functional teams to understand user requirements, assisting in the design of scalable and efficient application architectures, and integrating data analytics tools to enhance application functionality.
The role involves staying updated on current technological trends in application development and software engineering practices, ensuring that applications are reliable and meet evolving demands.
The Application Engineer II will also participate in code reviews, testing, and troubleshooting to ensure the security and performance of applications. The role encompasses the maintenance and support of existing applications, focusing on high availability, reliability, and optimal performance.

Application Engineer II

Key Responsibilities:

• Contribute to the development, deployment, and maintenance of full-stack, data-driven, cloud applications that serve our scientific community.
• Develop, measure, and monitor key metrics for all applications and services and consistently seek to iterate on and improve them.
• Operate and support applications deployed in a production environment.
• Take loosely defined mock-ups and producing rapid MVPs through to production grade experiences.
• Work with product teams on product roadmaps and developing end user requirements.
• Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and professional growth in software engineering.
• Drive a culture of innovation, transparency, and trust.
• Operate within a qualified environment with a patient first mentality.

Why You?

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related discipline
• At least 2 years of experience in independent backend development role (ability to work independently is a must).
• Deep knowledge and experience in back-end technologies: Python or Go as a must-have, additional languages as a strong asset
• Strong experience with Dev Ops: (e.g. Git Hub, Git Hub Actions, Azure Dev Ops, Jenkins; Ia C experience like Terraform is a strong asset).
• Hands-on experience with containerization solutions: Docker and Kubernetes
• Experience in working with multinational teams is a strong asset.

Preferred skills:

• Hands-on experience in front-end technologies: Java Script, Typescript, React.js, Angular.js or similar.
• API development ability, using technologies and standards like REST/Graph QL/g RPC or similar.
• Experience with code quality/security control tools (e.g. Sonar Qube or Blackduck)
• Hands-on experience in developing and deploying applications in a cloud environment like Google Cloud (preferred), AWS, Azure, including experience in use of Paa S cloud hosting solutions.
• Experience with Authentication & Authorisation Mechanisms e.g. OAuth2
• Experience with Manual and Automated testing (conducting UAT testing with customers; familiarity with tools like Selenium)
• Knowledge of database modelling, database concepts and SQL
• Experience with Microservice architecture
• Experience in Agile software development and Technical documentation, using common environments such as Jira and Confluence
• Good communication skills (English C1 level verbal and written).
• Experience in working with Enterprise solutions (e.g. project delivery in or for Fortune1000 company)
